1926 Traction Manually Controlled Otis elevator @ Redlands Galleria (Former Harris Dept. Store)
Redlands, California. MY FIRST MANUALLY CONTROLLED, CRANK OPERATED ELEVATOR!! And probably the only in Southern California! Like most of the area, this building was originally orange trees (something Redlands is known for). A new dry goods store and pharmacy (and a local family) built the building in 1903. I #39;m not sure if the building was originally split, or if it was 2 stories, but it was split. In the late 1910 #39;s or early 1920 #39;s, the family modernized the building for Harris. Either during the modernization or while Harris was there, the building was burnt to ground. Harris rebuilt the building and opened in 1926. I don #39;t know how long they were in the building, but they moved to the Redlands Mall (just down the street) before they were bought out by Gottshalks. And listen to that motor it almost sounds hydraulic!! There was an employee operating the elevator, so I had to hide the camera to get the motor, but I didn #39;t cover the mic! The gate was removed at some point. Original Brand: Otis Model: N/A Modernized By: N/A Capacity: 1800 lbs. # in Bank: 1 Date Installed: 1926 Date Modernized: N/A Motor Type: Overhead Traction Original Fixtures: Otis Manually Controlled Crank Current Fixtures: Same Floors Served: 3, B-2 (doesn #39;t serve mezzanine) Thanks for watching!
