Good jokes and colorful characters are essential elements for any successful comedy series, but those ingredients won't work without chemistry.

The importance of chemistry among cast members was among the topics discussed at The Envelope's Emmy Round Table of comedy shows, elicting candid views from cast members of some of TV's top laugh fests. Participants included Carrie Brownstein of "Portlandia," Eric Stonestreet of "Modern Family," Tony Hale of "Veep," Wendi McLendon-Covey of "The Goldbergs" and Taylor Schilling of "Orange Is the New Black" in conversation.

"Nothing is funner than riding that comic wave with somebody," said Hale as he spoke about the back-and-forth between ensemble members.

The importance of chemistry can help overcome other obstacles, said McLendon-Covey. "You don't know how you show up and do things some days you just have to rally," said the "Goldbergs" actress. "But the chemisty will get you there, if you know you have the support of your costar or you easily get in a groove. You find it."

Take a look at the video clip above to see how this conversation and others played out, and look for more clips to come soon.
