The home school or on-line learning high school is growing in popularity. Yet, for all the benefits of these approaches, there are some downsides. One of which is the availability of a laboratory component for science courses. The most often mentioned barrier, particularly for chemistry, is the availability of the materials required to conduct the laboratories as they use traditional laboratory type chemicals and/or specialized equipment. Sophic Pursuits, Inc. is working to remove this particular barrier as a chemistry laboratory course does not have to be expensive or require hard to find supplies. Basic laboratory skills can be learned using materials that are found in most kitchens.

Discovering Chemistry is currently in the pilot testing phase, with a full release of the materials to be available in the early fall. And, Sophic Pursuits is looking for pilot test families to help with this effort. The laboratory course is designed to accompany any chemistry text or can stand alone. The course is written so that any parent or instructor can us it - whether you have a science background or not. It focuses on basic laboratory skills that the high school student will need for that freshman laboratory in college: measurement techniques, chemical calculations, laboratory note-taking, and laboratory reports. A sampling of laboratory activities in Discovering Chemistry include: a safety information scavenger hunt; accuracy and precision; density; freeze point depression,; writing a laboratory report; and exploring chemical reactions.

The chemicals and experiments use items from your kitchen or traditional laboratory equipment. The materials include an equipment list with references about purchasing the items referenced. Sophic Pursuits has worked hard to make this course affordable, and the required items should be easily obtained at a local hobby shop, hardware store, grocery store or the internet. A sample laboratory activity - a Chemical Scavenger Hunt is available on the website.

Sophic Pursuits is looking for ten (10) families to pilot test the program. Families chosen for the pilot test will receive the student and instructor manual materials, along with additional guides and resource material. Additionally, the author will be available to these families to address any questions or issues that they may have while utilizing the materials. If you are interested in participating in the pilot program, please go to the Contact Us form on the website.
