Teachers have chemistry at conference at FSU

FITCHBURG -- Fitchburg State University will host the 75th summer conference of the New England Association of Chemistry Teachers from Monday through Aug. 14.

The conference will open with a reception at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the Gregg P. Lisciotti Pavilion in the university's Science Center, 333 North St. All chemistry alumni, faculty at local colleges and universities and chemistry teachers in middle and high schools are also invited to the reception, even if they are not attending the conference.

The New England Association of Chemistry Teachers was founded in 1898 by a group of high-school and college teachers meeting at Malden High School and was incorporated in Massachusetts in 1910. Today its membership also includes middle-school teachers, administrators and industrial associates interested in chemical education. The aim of NEACT is to promote the teaching and learning of chemistry.

The conference will consist of presentations and workshops related to the theme of the conference: "next generation chemistry."

Plenary sessions include presentations on new Next Generation Science Standards, their approach to chemistry teaching in New England states, the influence of those standards on educator preparation, and alternate laboratory assessments, among others.

This is the second time Fitchburg State is hosting the NEACT conference. The campus previously hosted the 71st summer conference in 2010.

The president of NEACT is longtime educator Mary Christian-Madden, and Fitchburg State professor Mel Govindan, chairman of the university's Biology and Chemistry Department, is its president-elect.
