ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va.--The cardiology team at Martha Jefferson Hospital is enjoying better than gold-standard recognition for its work in taking care of heart patients in and around the community.

After years and years of streamlining and fine-tuning, the cardiology team at Martha Jefferson has been given the platinum award, which is the highest award possible from the American College of Cardiology.

The Martha Jefferson Cardiology Department joins about 225 other hospitals across the country in achieving platinum status.

The award is based on a national database that benchmarks quality in cardiac care and starts from the time a heart attack victim becomes a patient, on through the patient's progress during their stay and beyond to their release home.

Medical director of the hospital's cardiac catheter lab tells Newsplex the keys to snagging the top award were taking a total team approach and building a culture that is truly patient-centered.

"It's no longer about my area or your area. It's about taking care of the patient and doing what's best for the patient, said Dr. Joshua Fischer. Once you have that and once you have that mindset, once you have that team approach of everybody coming together to work toward that goal, then you can really accomplish amazing things."

This is the first time Martha Jefferson's cardiac team has taken the platinum award.
