Florida Southern to Hold Spencer Symposium

LAKELAND | The fifth annual Spencer Symposium at Florida Southern College, "Advancements on the Frontiers of Chemistry and Medicine," will be held on campus from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 12.

It will take place in the Anne MacGregor Jenkins Recital Hall adjacent to Branscomb Auditorium.

The symposium is presented to students, professionals and the community to highlight scientific advances in chemistry with applications in the health field.

The lectures are free and open to the public.

Speakers and topics are:

Stephen J. Gardell, director of translational research resources and associate professor at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute: "Changing Trends for Discovery Research in Big Pharma' Golden Opportunity for Biomedical Research Organizations."

Brian M. Paegel, assistant professor of molecular therapeutics at the Scripps Research Institute, "The Revolution Will Be Compartmentalized: Technology for Distributed Drug Discovery."

Jonathan Revels, radiology resident, Eastern Virginia Medical School (Winter Haven High School and FSC graduate), "Understanding Radiology: Anyone Can Be a Doctor."

Jeanine Yacoub, Ph.D. candidate, University of South Florida (Lake Gibson High School and FSC graduate), "Searching for Drug Targets and Possible Treatments for Toxoplasmosis."
