Matthew A. Fisher of Hempfield, an associate professor of chemistry at St. Vincent College, has been selected by the American Chemical Society as a 2015 recipient of its Committee on Environmental Improvement Award for exemplary contributions to the incorporation of sustainability into chemical education.

Fisher will present a talk on Sustainability and undergraduate chemistry education: How far we have come and what work remains at the 249th national meeting of the society in Denver March 22-26.

I have consistently and passionately advocated for the importance of incorporating sustainability into undergraduate education, Fisher said in a news release.

Fisher served as a member of the ACS Committee on Environmental Improvement for a decade and was chair in 2013. The committee is responsible for advising ACS governing bodies on pertinent environmental issues in science and public policy. Specific responsibilities include monitoring environmental legislation and regulations for possible comments or recommendations from the society, keeping abreast of current and emerging environmental problems and researching environmental chemistry issues, developing society position statements and promoting environmental chemistry education in secondary schools and colleges and for the general public.

Fisher, who earned a doctoral degree in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, joined the faculty at the Unity college in 1995.

Fisher has directed the St. Vincent teaching enhancement and mentoring program and served as team leader for college involvement in the National Science Foundation-funded SENCER Project, or Scientific Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities. He has participated in the common texts and interdisciplinary writing programs, and has served on the biotechnology advisory committee and the executive committee for the college's center for ethics in community. He was selected by the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning as a 2005 Carnegie Scholar.

His wife, Bettie Davis, is on the faculty at St. Vincent.
