Student advocacy group Vox: Voices for Planned Parenthood launched the Know Your Body campaign this week to reduce the stigma surrounding issues of reproductive anatomy, sexual health.

Co-sponsored by the Cornell Womens Resource Center, the campaign aims to encourage Cornellians to have conversations about sexually transmitted diseases, birth control, sexual pleasure and consent, according to Vox President Cassidy Clark 17.

Why is it that as soon as the words vagina, gynecologist or birth control are mentioned, voices immediately become hushed and people look around to make sure no one heard them say such a thing? -Lauren Cooley 17

There is no good reason for students to feel uncomfortable discussing these issues, said Lauren Cooley 17, vice president of Vox.

Why is it that as soon as the words vagina, gynecologist or birth control are mentioned, voices immediately become hushed and people look around to make sure no one heard them say such a thing? asked Lauren Cooley 17. The taboo nature of these topics is absolutely unnecessary.

Additionally, the stigma surrounding these issues can prevent students from being informed, according to Clark.

Our society often makes it very difficult for us to be informed about topics like your sexual and reproductive anatomy, the status of our sexual health, what gives our bodies pleasure and how to know what types of sexual activities we feel comfortable with, Clark said.

Through a social media campaign and tabling in the lobby of Willard Straight Hall, Vox hopes to carry out its education and awareness campaign, according to Zoe Maisel 18, chair of public relations for the organization.

[Well be] posting about topics to help educate about our bodies and will be trying to reach out to new audiences, she said.
