President Benigno Aquino III has approved the Chemistry Profession Act, which regulates and modernizes the practice of chemistry in the Philippines.

Republic Act 10657, which Aquino signed last March 27, repealed Republic Act 754, the earlier law that regulated the practice of chemistry in the country.

The new law expands the definition of chemistry and the scope of its professional practice. R.A. 10657 defines chemistry as the study, analysis, modification and calculations of physico-chemical or biochemical properties of matter.

The newly signed legislation also mandates the creation of Professional Regulatory Board of Chemistry, which will be composed of three members appointed by the President. Members of the board will serve three-year terms.

The board is tasked to supervise and regulate the practice of the chemistry profession in the Philippines, and to come up with implementing guidelines for the new law.

Just like the repealed law, R.A. 10657 also requires an individual who wants to practice chemistry and in the Philippines to pass the licensure examination given by the Professional Regulatory Board of Chemistry. Andreo Calonzo/BM, GMA News
