In data released last week, the University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) Medical School Plastic Surgery Residency Program was ranked number one in the country based on a peer review process including more than 50,000 nominations submitted by board-certified physicians to U.S. News and World Report and Doximity. The data was collected as part of a larger initiative to create a discovery tool for senior medical students to help them learn about programs that fit their own personal career and training goals.

Jeffrey Kenkel, MD, professor, interim chairman and director of UTSWs plastic surgery residency program was thrilled to receive the news. Typically, residency programs in plastic surgery focus on reconstruction and not as much on aesthetics. It is an honor to be in a leadership role in education and to continue to stress the importance of aesthetics in plastic surgery. Because we added an entire year of training to our residencies, we have more opportunities to broaden our residents education in areas such as clinic, research, and working with our clinical faculty in the private practice community. This allows them to gain first-hand experience seeing patients pre- and post-surgery, while learning the proper procedures for specific patients and longer-term recovery processes. We are very proud of our graduates who often give back regardless of their practice environment, he stated.

Kenkel, who is a past president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and the current associate editor of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal (ASJ), the clinical publication of ASAPS, is able to convey the importance of getting broader exposure in all aspects of plastic surgery experience to UTSWs residents. By sharing access to ASJ and RADAR Resource, (available on the AnzuMedical iPad app featuring the ability to create your own medical library, earn Category 1 CME and Patient Safety credits), residents engage in dialogue with other RADAR users and browse the latest industry offerings, enhancing their educational experience far beyond the classroom walls. They are also permitted to attend ASAPS annual meeting including its scientific sessions and teaching courses free-of-charge.

The community has rallied around the plastic surgery programs residents and they play an active role in their education, which has substantial benefit to all residents at UTSW and the public at-large, explained Dr. Kenkel. ###
