Katlin Pittman was among the winners of the 2012 VFW and Ladies Auxiliary sponsored Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition, announced March 4 in Washington, D.C. Pittman, a senior at Star Valley High School, placed 11th in the nationwide competition. As a national winner she was the recipient of a $2,500 scholarship. National winners will also be hosted for tours of historic sites in Philadelphia and Valley Forge in June. The theme this year for the audio essay was based on the question, Is There Pride in Serving in the Military. (Please see Pittmans report below.) Pittman earned the trip to Washington after placing first with the same audio-essay in the Wyoming competition earlier the year. While in Washington she joined other essay participants and exchanged information and pins from their respective home communities and states.

The highlight of my trip was being able to get to know so many great people from around the country, and the world, while touring D.C. Pittman reported. I made lifelong friends and had an all-around great experience.

The SVHS Senior visited the VFW headquarters while in the nations capital.

After visiting with the VFW authorities and hearing how they appreciated the essay contributions, Pittman noted. It really gave me a new perspective and an even greater appreciation for our veterans.

The Voice of Democracy program celebrated its 65th year in 2012.

The VFW and Ladies Auxiliary also features an essay program called, Patriots Pen, which allows students the opportunity to express their opinions through a written essay. The Patriots Pen essay was based on the question, Are You Proud of Your Country?

Both programs are under the direction of Chuck and Cheryl Sutter in Star Valley and Lincoln County.

Katlin Pittmans audio-essay is as follow:

Is There Pride in Serving Our Military? By Katlin Pittman What does pride mean to you? Some people may say that it is a feeling of satisfaction from a job well done. Others may say that pride is a feeling that comes from standing up for something that they care about. Still others may say that pride is what they feel when they serve their own country. Pride does not only exist in the hearts of those actively serving in the military, but also it exists in the hearts of those around them. Mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and other friends and family members also feel a sense of pride knowing that someone they love is fighting to protect their freedoms. To show how there is pride in serving in the military, let us look more in depth at the word pride.

P: P is for people. Friends and family make a difference in the lives of military members: the young wife who has to carry on alone while her husband serves overseas; the mother who never goes a day without the thought that her son or daughter may never come home; the young child who spends the first part of his life not knowing who Daddy is. These people have one common thread that runs through each of their lives. All of them have pride in the fact that they are connected to someone who is serving their country. These friends and family members that are left at home feel as though they are a part of something bigger than themselves. One does not have to actively serve in the military to feel pride in the military.
