Witnesses concerned about mental health of man struck by a vehicle – Fort Wayne’s NBC

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Waynes NBC)- Witnesses say they are worried about the man who they say was walking on the side of the road wearing a hospital gown.

Thursday, just after 3:50 p.m., Fort Wayne Police and other first responders were called out to the intersection of Reed Road and Woodstock Drive to reports of apedestrian struckby a vehicle.

Multiple witnesses said they saw the man walking on the side of the road wearing only a hospital gown and tall black socks. Candace Moore said she was just following her normal routine when she spotted the man.

I was driving my normal route for Black Hawk Christian, I picked up my daughter from school. Moore said.

Both Moore and Sherry Keller said they saw they man and became very worried.

I was totally confused, had no idea what was going on but I knew it wasnt right. Keller said.

Both women said they made a call to 911, and the dispatcher told them they had already received multiple calls from numerous people.

It was very frustrating as a bystander not to be able to help him and not seeing anybody be able to help him. Keller said.

She said she was determined to stay near him hoping he would receive the help he needed.

I felt just felt so helpless, I felt helpless to the extent that I was ready to pull over and put this man in my car if I could, and that goes against everything I believe about safety but I was willing to do that because I was feeling so desperate for this man, Keller said.

Police confirmed with Fort Waynes NBC, they received a call about someone suffering from mental illness walking along Reed Rd, but they werent able to confirm where he was coming from.

I can relate with having thoughts because I have experienced depression and anxiety myself, so mental health I feel like Fort Wayne hasnt done a good job of making it not a stigma. Moore said.

Moore worked for the Rescue Mission for 11 years and said her experience working there lead her to believe the man needed help. She says she just wishes it would have ended differently.

I just feel like the guy didnt get the help he needed and I just know how it feels to be in that position and want someone like desperately want someone just to ask me if Im OK. Moore said.
