A TEENAGER from Fortune College in Christchurch is going to take part in the Romsey 5 Mile this weekend to raise money for the Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy.

Aaran Kane, who has learning difficulties and cerebral palsy, ran the Maverick Original Hampshire race at Holmsley as a trial run for the Romsey 5 and, despite the extremely muddy conditions, finished the race strongly.

The Romsey 5 Mile, organised by Challenging Events, is held in the grounds of the Broadlands estate on Sunday 26th January at 9am.

Fundraising Coordinator at the Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy Paola King said: It means such a lot to me personally to see Aaran competing in the races because I have seen how hard he has trained and how much effort he has put in to cope with his physical difficulties.

He joined in a training session with Project Mercury, managed by Jon Tilt from Southampton Athletics Club, and they were very impressed with his determination and effort.

Aaran has been a great ambassador for all of the students at Fortune College and more students are interested in being involved in external events; encouraged by Aarans wonderful example.

The money will be used by the Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy to improve the resources and facilities at Fortune College, a specialist college for young people with learning difficulties and disabilities aged 16 to 25.

The college provides student with the opportunity to achieve accredited qualifications, as well as develop communication skills, independent living skills, self-confidence.

Paola added: Students receive funding for their education and medical needs, but all the facilities and living accommodation require funds, raised mainly by charitable donations, for their upkeep and improvement.

Aaran has raised just over 800 on his JustGiving page and is trying hard to raise over the 1,000 mark.
