Actor Irrfan Khan, who recently returned to acting has been diagnosed with a colon infection. An official source confirmed that he has been admitted to an ICU at Kokilaben hospital and is under doctor's observation. While we wait further reports, we hope he makes a quick recovery. What is a colon infection? Colitis is a general term for inflammation of the inner lining of the colon, which is our large intestine. There are different types of colitis categorized by the cause including infection, poor blood supply and parasites, which can cause inflamed colon. Common symptoms of an inflamed colon include abdominal pain, diarrhoea and cramping. Causes of colon inflammation Infection The infection colitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria and parasites. Infection colitis can be contracted from contaminated water, foodborne illnesses or poor hygiene.

Inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBD) IBD is a group of chronic disease that causes inflammation of the digestive tract. The two main types of IBD - Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis.

Ischemic colitis When there is reduced blood flow in a portion of the colon, it can cause Ischemic colitis.

Allergic reactions Allergic colitis is more common in babies than adults. The condition affects almost two-three per cent of infants.

Microscopic colitis Microscopic colitis is caused by an increase in the lymphocytes. This colitis can only be seen through a microscope.

Drug-induced colitis Some anti-inflammatory drugs are linked with an inflamed colon in some people. Drugs responsible for this are NSAIDs. Elderly people or people who have used NSAIDs for a long term are at risk of developing drug-induced colitis.
