Re Military pay (Your Views, Aug. 16): I agree with everything Daniel Hoffman said in his letter. I served for 20 years as an enlisted active duty sailor. I never experienced financial problems and purchased a new house while making car payments on a new car as an E-5. I simply did not purchase a huge house or a luxury car and made sure I could afford these things before purchasing them. I only used a credit card when I knew I could pay the balance at the end of the month. The Navy has numerous options for learning about budgeting, personal finances and retirement planning. While in the Navy, I worked with many people who had to have the latest phone, the most TV options, the latest car, and went out for lunch every day, etc. These are the same problems people have in the civilian world.
