A local high school hockey player who suffered a serious spinal cord injury on the ice is preparing to be transferred to a specialized rehabilitation center in Georgia next week.A.J. Quetta, a senior at Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, crashed head-first into the boards in a Jan. 26 game against Pope Francis in West Springfield. On Monday, Quetta will be transferred from Massachusetts General Hospital to Shepherd Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta. According to a family statement, he is expected to spend at least three months there. The rehab specializes in the treatment of spinal cord and brain injuries. "We would like to thank everyone for their continued support and prayers for our son," Anthony Quetta, Sr. said in a statement. "Words can't express our steadfast appreciation to all the donors during this time. This would not be possible without all the support we received."The rehab in Atlanta is the same one that treated Matt Brown, a Massachusetts native who suffered a spinal cord injury while playing high school hockey 11 years ago. Brown, who played for and graduated from Norwood High School, has launched a foundation to support spinal cord injury patients and their families. Brown's family has been in contact with the Quettas.
