Area riders participating in the 2012 Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Hillclimb Association (RMSHA) completed their final event at Schweitzer Mountain in Sandpoint, Idaho over the weekend.

Many used the last race to buoy their final points standings and in some cases catapulted them to a points championship. Luke Raineys first place finish in the Pro 700 Stock helped him also claim the points title in the same class for the season. Jay Mentaberry did the same in the Semi-Pro Stock division.

Gavin Balls won the Semi-Pro Modified race which vaulted him to the points title in just his first year of competition. Hes one of many young riders who claimed numerous top ten finishes during the season in a growing movement in the valley. Every year it seems like its gotten bigger, said Hal Titensor, scheduled to serve as vice-president of RMSHA in 2013. There is more and more interest and we are also starting to produce some of the better riders in the circuit in our area. I honestly think we have a bigger percentage of people who are doing well than anyone else.

This was no more evident at Schweitzer Mountain where Balls, Justin Thomas and Mentaberry finished first, second and third respectively.

Over the course of the season there were a whopping 30 top-ten finishes in the points standings from Star Valley riders.

Titensor believes there is still more work to do, particularly in terms of bringing more eyeballs to an event the combines motorsports and Mother Nature.

We are really trying to build more interest for sponsorship, he said. We want to try and bring more spectators and find some additional areas to hold hill climbs. Afton is always voted the second best hill in the circuit behind Jackson In Jackson you have four main snowmachine companies and they show off their gear with ten to twenty booths as they promote their stuff. We would like to do more of that and add some different events with side-by-side racing to make it a little more exciting.

With three points champions this season many riders expected to return to the snow in the 2013 season, the residents of the valley are starting to pay more attention.

Part of making it more popular is I would like to see more of the community rally around their racers like weve started to do, Titensor concluded. I think that would help bring more enthusiasm to the race.
