Qatar Universitys College of Pharmacy (CPH) has been officially recognised by the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC), the national certification body for the pharmacy profession in Canada. The move by PEBC recognises the Colleges BSc (Pharm) graduates as graduates of a pharmacy programme accredited by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP). This means the colleges graduates will not be required to sit the PEBC Pharmacist Evaluating Examination but will be permitted direct entry to the PEBC Pharmacist Qualifying Examination, which is typically reserved for pharmacy graduates in Canada and the US. The PEBC will also deliver Part 1 of its Pharmacist Qualifying Examination in Qatar on a pilot basis. This will take place in November, allowing CPH students to sit the exam in Doha, making it the first time it will be delivered outside of North America, and which, if successful, will be repeated annually. CPH Dean Dr Peter Jewesson described the recognition as a very important milestone for the new programme, the university and for Qatar-Canada relations. Under the new National Health Strategy, Qatar seeks to improve healthcare outcomes for its citizens by improving services and research aimed at improving the effectiveness and quality of healthcare. The college plays an important role in this initiative. Benchmarking our programme against Canadian standards through the CCAPP programme accreditation and the PEBC competency standards is an important component of our strategic planning and reflects our commitment to continuous quality improvement. QU vice president and chief academic officer Dr Sheikha bint Jabor al-Thani praised the Colleges efforts in developing its stature and its continued pursuit for quality and excellence. It recognises all the hard work undertaken by the College of Pharmacy to establish itself as a centre of excellence operating according to the very best practices worldwide. The CPH, one of QUs seven colleges, was established in 2007 to help meet the countrys growing demand for pharmacy experts. It is the first and only pharmacy college in Qatar and currently offers three degree programmes an undergraduate BSc (Pharm) degree, from which the first students graduated last year; a research-based Masters programme (MSc), from which the first students will graduate in 2013; and a full-time post-baccalaureate Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree with its first students expected to graduate in July this year, and its part-time students in 2014. The CPH is also the first international pharmacy programme to be awarded CCAPP accreditation status.
