Detective Sergeant Chris Henderson, of Dunedin CIB, said the aggravated robbery occurred about 5.25pm, just before closing time.

A man entered the pharmacy, in Hillside Rd, and approached the five staff members, herding them into a back room.

No customers were present.

The offender stole a quantity of prescription drugs and left the pharmacy, running off along Ruskin Tce.

Police patrol cars and a dog handler were dispatched to the area.

The offender was described as European, about 182cm tall, of solid build and in his 30s.

He was wearing a black woollen hat, grey jersey and blue jeans and was carrying a white bag, similar to a shopping bag, Det Sgt Henderson said.

A scene examination would take place this morning, he said.

Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time, or who recognised the offender. Call Dunedin police on (03) 471-4800, or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555-111.
