June 23, 2008 Lightning strikes from a storm system that came through Northern California this weekend have sparked fires in several counties, spreading firefighting resources thin. According to sources at the Susanville Interagency Fire Center, crews and resources are scattered in and around the north state, including Lassen, Plumas, Tehama, Modoc, Shasta, Trinity, Mendocino, Santa Clara and Humboldt counties, to name a few.

SIFC manager Craig Kincaid said people can expect to see smoke in the air for awhile, as it is coming from not just one, but many fires in the state. He also recommended that people should try to avoid the smoke as much as possible, either by staying indoors or avoiding strenuous exercise.

Lassen Public Health Officer Dr. Kenneth Korver said it was especially important for people with health issues to remain indoors.

Probably a good idea for people with serious illnesses, like heart and lung problems, not to get out too much, Korver said. They should stay inside as best they can before it clears. (The smoke) is not the greatest for us, but theres nothing we can do about it. If you stay inside, you get less of it.

FIREFIGHTING EFFORTS Locally, firefighting crews are focusing on three fire complexes, the Cub Fire Complex, the Lassen National Forest June Lightning Complex and the Lassen-Modoc Unit June Lightning Complex. So far, all three fires are in the Lassen National Forest. A fire complex is a series of smaller fires in various locations around one central area.

The Cub Fire Complex is located about 16 miles southwest of Chester. As of 8 a.m. on Monday, June 23, the fire is still zero percent contained and has burned about 600 acres. As of 5:30 a.m., it has about 91 people out on the fire, with four crews, 21 engines and one helicopter engaging the fires. Information from SIFC stated the fires are still moving at a rapid spread rate.

The LNF June Lightning Complex is also spreading rapidly, and is located in roughly the same area as the Cub Complex. It is currently about 10 percent contained, and has burned about 550 acres. As of Monday, June 23, the fire has about 108 people working on it, with five crews, 20 engines and one helicopter dedicated to the fire so far.

The LMU June Lightning Complex is located near the border of Shasta and Lassen Counties. The main sources of fuel on the fire are brush timber and grass, which so far have contributed to the fire being about 250 acres in size, with 10 percent containment. So far, it has attracted 327 firefighting personnel, with 10 crews, 14 engines and two helicopters on board.

Kincaid said a precautionary evacuation of the community of Little Valley has gone into affect, as a voluntary measure for residents.

Kincaid also said state and local firefighting resources are spread very thin right now, and that another lightning storm like the one that came though last weekend could put resources in a very dangerous position.
