Latest Court Update Shows Pradaxa Lawsuits on the Rise

The latest report from the Judicial Panel on MultiDistrict Litigation indicates the number of Pradaxa cases filed in federal court over internal bleeding has risen, from approximately 100 to 151. The JPML issued its latest report on November 14, 2012.*

The report comes as researchers disagree on the safety of the drug. The Journal for The American Medical Association warned on September 3, 2012 that the FDA may have rushed approval of Pradaxa, overlooking key Pradaxa side effects like internal bleeding. In its latest study released November 4, 2012, however, the FDA stated that, for now, Pradaxa carries the same risk as other blood thinners.

A report issued by the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices QuarterWatch** on October 3, 2012 estimates that prescription drug complaints to the FDA have risen 90% in the past 4 years, and two drugs, Pradaxa and Chantix, are responsible for 37% of that increase.

Anyone affected by internal bleeding after taking Pradaxa is urged to speak with a lawyer about their legal options as soon as possible.

While all anticoagulants can cause internal bleeding, the Journal of Neurosurgery reported doctors concerns on March 6, 2012 that, once Pradaxa causes internal bleeding, there is little they can do to stop it.

Due to the number of Pradaxa lawsuits expected, a central court was recently established in Illinois to handle the claims. The case is known as MDL No. 2385, IN RE: Pradaxa Product Liability Litigation, Southern District of Illinois. Judge Herndon ordered on July 24, 2012 that those injured by Pradaxa can proceed with lawsuits.
