Members of the Army National Guard which included valley residents and members of the 1041st welcomed their neighbors to the Lincoln County Fairgrounds last week to inform the public about the actions of their local unit.

Sometimes people forget that were here and we want to remind them that we are a part of their community and wanted to reach out to them, said SFC Shawn Chaufty. Governors of each and every state act as Commander and Chief of their state or territorys National Guard. We can be called on during local emergencies or statewide emergencies. The National Guard had over 55,000 Army National Guard that aided with Superstorm Sandy. They are also a big part of fighting wildfires at times with chainsaws on their backs to go out and help save their community. Chaufty was promoted as part of the evening from staff sergeant to sergeant first class. He served in the Marine Corps for 17 years and he and his wife and two daughters now live in the area.

Those in attendance were shown responsibilities and benefits of joining the National Guard and what their commitment would be in terms of service. Many of those in uniform served in other branches of service before joining the Guard.

Sometimes there might be a misconception that the National Guard isnt as capable as regular military,Chaufty said. Im here to tell you, we train for the exact same things and go out for the same missions. Whether it be in Afghanistan, Kuwait or Iraq. The National Guard is a very important part of our nations military.

As part of the presentation, there were photos of training exercises which included water-related rescue drills and training pertaining to the bridging missions specific to the 1041st which includes soldiers from Afton, Evanston and Rock Springs.

Many of the items on display included watercraft, humvees, machine guns and historic flags dating back to the early days of the nation.
