Police have appealed for information on stolen prescription drugs after opioids and drug paraphernalia was uncovered during raids at two New England homes.

Officers will take action against two men in Armidale and Inverell in relation to possession of oxycontin pills (commonly known as hillbilly heroin) they believe were stolen from an Armidale pharmacy.

They say Friday's raids are part of a crackdown on what they believe to be a "widespread" prescription drug problem in the community.

The break-in at the pharmacy happened eight days ago and, officers say oxycontin tablets, ranging from mid-to-high strength, were stolen from a safe.

The number of tablets stolen was initially thought to be around 600 but police said a subsequent stocktake by the pharmacy revealed that 2000 tablets could have been stolen.

Morphine pills also were among the items taken.

Detectives began investigating the theft and their inquiries led them to an Armidale house and another in Inverell on Friday night.

Police searched the homes and allege they found 24 pills at the Armidale house along with drug paraphernalia and 33 tablets at the Inverell house.

A 25-year-old Armidale man was arrested at the Inverell house in relation to drug possession and an aggravated break and enter from last March.
