In this week's Keys to Caring, a stroke can be detrimental to your health and can have lasting affects if you don't get the right treatment.
People who suffer from a stroke may develop weaknesses in parts of their body and in many cases, could have speech problems.
The good news is medical experts say there are several different types of treatment to choose from, including medication strategies or the use of modern technology like arm and leg stimulation devices.
But the most critical thing to do is seek help immediately.
I think it's critical in today's time to seek out therapists specifically geared towards treating stroke patients, because they can often guide the patient as to the best treatments and what's available out there now and in the near future, explained Raymond Reichwein, Stroke Program Director for Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
A few of those therapists include a speech pathologist or an occupational therapist.
At home rehab programs are also available.
