The morning pick-me-up coffee drinkers crave is actually a sign of drug dependency, according to a Bristol professor.

Research from Bristol University shows that the buzz gained from a cup of coffee is actually a sign of it fighting caffeine withdrawal symptoms that have kicked in since the last cup.

Professor of biological psychology and caffeine expert, Peter Rogers, told the Mail that people who regularly drink caffeine become dependent on it and struggle to function without it.

They just don't function normally without the drug on board, he said.

If it's your first tea or coffee of the day, it gets you back to normal, but beyond that you don't get much more of a kick.

Prof Rogers has studied coffee and its effects for more than 20 years and as a result of his findings he and his colleagues have given up caffeine themselves.
