Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a familiar enemy. Thousands of people ride for a cure for MS in cycling-related fundraising events every year, including one in New Bern each September.

The neuro-muscular autoimmune disease affects more than half a million people nationwide, some with crippling effects, and so far research has not pinned down a cause or cure, but continues to find treatments to help many patients better cope with it.

Geneva Best Horne of the Pleasant Hill community just outside New Bern was diagnosed with MS in 2006 after she didnt recover as quickly as doctors felt she should from a 2005 accident.

When the diagnosis came down, Horne was advised that an option for treatment was weekly interferon injections, but I asked if could go natural, she said.

She was already interested in exercise and had played basketball at the West Street and J.T. Barber schools as a girl. And she had moved to a healthy, more natural lifestyle years before, spurred on by Dr. Neil Bender, who started Eastern Carolina Internal Medicine (now CarolinaEast Internal Medicine) in Pollocksville.

He told me you can take charge of your health or depend on medication for the rest of your life, Horne said.

She said, I started taking health supplements including cod liver oil, flax seed oil, fish oil, selenium, olive oil and was later introduced to Zradical Juice or Fucoidan, aloe vera juice, and Beyond Tangy Tangerine with 115 fruits and vegetables.

She is on no prescription medication to treat her MS.

Some of those treatments come from a 90ForLive program she was introduced to at a church-related health program, and she continues to participate in a Majestic Eagles Health Team that gives testimonials to others as well as offers mutual support through daily conference calls to keep mind, body and spirit working together for successful treatment.

Not a black womans disease
