Scarborough, Ontario (PRWEB) June 10, 2014
South Asian Autism Awareness Centre (SAAAC) today announced the implementation of Skills, a web-based tool, in its clients treatment programs. The Centre, located in Scarborough, Ontario, treats children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities and is gradually introducing Skills with each of its clients. The Skills tool improves the SAAAC assessment process and its ability to design effective individualized treatment plans for its clients while automating the tracking of progress and enhancing collaboration between the treatment team and families.
Skills guides us with a strong repertoire of potential activities and goals for the students we work with and has proven to be an ideal solution, as we work with a high number of children and youth of varying ages, said program director of South Asian Autism Awareness Centre Neeran Kuni. Skills is a great answer to our need for measurable outcomes, evidence-based practices, and a universal approach that can be utilized by staff, parents, and siblings alike.
Skills is the result of 30 years of research and evidence-based practices in the assessment and treatment of children with ASD, said Eliana Ferreira, Skills director and general manager. Several studies have been published documenting the validity and reliability of Skills components.
According to Autism Society Canada, autism is recognized as the most common neurological disorder affecting children and one of the most common developmental disabilities in Canada. Although there is no federal government monitoring system in place to provide accurate statistics on the prevalence of ASD in Canada, statistics by Health Canada state that international studies indicate about one in every 150 to 160 children has autism.
