This week, TV presenter Mariella Frostrup, 52, spoke out after her familys 400-a-month private medical insurance policy that didnt cover her for treatment for menopause-related ailments.

I would say the majority of ailments are natural, Ms Frostrup said. There are so many side effects of menopause, and it affects different women differently, so the insurers can use this as a blanket ban.

Menopause-related care such as hormone replacement therapy is typically not covered, and neither are costs relating to pregnancy, childbirth or fertility treatment.

Existing medical conditions, even if they werent fully diagnosed prior to the policy start date, are usually excluded, as well as chronic or long-term illnesses which can't be cured such as HIV/AIDs, diabetes, epilepsy and hypertension.

Mental health issues, depression and the cost of psychiatric treatment are also commonly excluded from cover, as are organ transplants, elective cosmetic surgery and experimental or unproven treatments.

Different policies do provide varying level of cover so read your policy documents carefully if something is not specifically mentioned you may not be covered for it.

Always check with your provider before having any treatment, otherwise you may have to cover the cost yourself.
