Catholic Health is again expanding its cardiology practice with the addition of a second private practice.

Trinity Medical Cardiology will double in size with the addition of 11 physicians from Cardiology Group of Western New York PC. In January, a dozen physicians from Buffalo Heart Group LLP joined Trinity Medical WNY PC, the physician practice network affiliate of Catholic Health.

Cardiology Group of Western New York has long partnered with Catholic Health hospitals, with its physicians practicing at Kenmore Mercy Hospital and Mercy Hospital in South Buffalo; and participated in the care coordination program offered by Catholic Medical Partners.

In operation for more than 30 years, Cardiology Group of Western New York has four sites in the region in Williamsville, Lockport and Orchard Park. All of those sites will remain, and will be renamed Trinity Medical Cardiology. The sites offer services including interventional cardiology, cardiovascular imaging as well as vascular and vein medicine.

In addition to cardiologists, the practices mid-level practitioners, clinical and support staff will make the move, providing continuity for patients and families, said Dr. Nadeem Haq, president of the group.

All of our physicians practice in Catholic Health hospitals, so it will be a smooth transition for our medical team as well as our patients, who will continue to receive the highest quality care and service through this new partnership, he said.

The deal marks the third major change in less than a year for the Western New York cardiology industry: Last April, Buffalo Cardiology & Pulmonary Associates Inc. closed its doors, with 16 physicians shifting to Buffalo Medical Group and others taking jobs at CCS Healthcare, UBMD Physicians Group, Mercy Comprehensive Care Center and Great Lakes Cardiovascular.

In this case, the deal gives Cardiology Group physicians more options, while allowing Trinity to continue growing its footprint in the region, said Dr. Michael Edbauer, president and CEO of Catholic Medical Partners and a member of the Catholic Health Ministry Leadership Council.

These are all existing members of the Western New York physician community who worked predominantly at Catholic Health, he said.

The move was spurred by a desire for the physicians to continue practicing despite ongoing reforms in the world of health care, Edbauer said. Additionally, the practice will see economies of scale through vendor relationships with the $1.2 billion Catholic Health as well as employee health insurance costs and recruiting.

More and more of the younger doctors are looking for employed models and they are looking for work/lifestyle balance, he said. A lot of that is achieved by having the critical mass of a large group. Thats been the primary attraction.
