High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than 25 percent of all adults in the UK. But you could lower your risk of developing hypertension by simply taking daily probiotic supplements, it's been claimed.

Hypertension puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

Eating an unhealthy diet or not doing enough regular exercise could be raising your chances of high blood pressure.

But you could lower your chances of developing the condition by taking supplements, scientists have claimed.

Regularly adding probiotic capsules to your diet may help to reduce your blood pressure.

Certain types of probiotics are better are lowering blood pressure than others, according to nutritionist Dr Ruairi Robertson.

Lactobacilli planetarium, in particular, has been claimed to significantly reduce blood pressure.

But scientists have also revealed that there's an overall benefit to taking probiotics for people with high blood pressure.

Patients saw the greatest effect when taking the probiotics for at least eight weeks, he added.

"High blood pressure is a risk factor for heart disease, and it may be lowered by certain probiotics," the nutritionist wrote for medical website Healthline.

"A number of studies have shown that certain probiotics can significantly reduce blood pressure, especially in people with high blood pressure.

"Large reviews combining the results from other studies have found an overall beneficial effect of certain probiotics on blood pressure.

"One of these large studies found a reduction in blood pressure, especially under the following conditions: When blood pressure was high originally; when multiple types of probiotics were taken at the same time; when the probiotics were taken for more than eight weeks."

But you should always speak to a doctor before adding any new supplements to your diet.

Probiotics shouldn't be used as a replacement for your prescription medication.

Meanwhile, a number of other supplements have been claimed to reduce blood pressure.

Potassium, fibre, garlic, magnesium and vitamin D supplements have all been linked to a lower risk of hypertension.

High blood pressure is often known as the silent killer, as you may not even know youre at risk of the condition.

But some of the earliest symptoms of hypertension include severe headaches and dizziness.

Everyone over 40 years old should check their blood pressure at least once every five years.

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist to have your blood pressure checked.
