The Department of Biological Sciences offers a wide range of degrees. These include a BA or BS in Biology, BS in Biomedical Sciences, MA or MS in Biology, and a PhD in Biological and Biomedical Sciences. Degrees in the biological sciences prepare students for a variety of careers. Many of the students from our programs go on to medical school or graduate programs, or complete the 5-year STEP program leading to secondary education certification. Our programs prepare students for graduate study in the life sciences, laboratory work and research in private and government industries, professional careers in medicine, dentistry, nursing or other allied health areas or teaching biology in high school. The department offers a diversified selection of coursesand researchprograms, and students select courses that suit their goals and interests. The departments faculty maintain active, internationally-renowned, research programs in specific sub-disciplines of biological sciences which are accessible to students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. With permission, undergraduate students may elect to participate in the research laboratories of individual faculty members for which they may receive course credit (BIO 490). The department's faculty have published several student co-authored papersas a result of student participation in lab research. Such opportunities are of particular value to students preparing for graduate study, professional schools, or research positions. Graduate students, at both the MS and the PhD level, are participating in their faculty mentors research program by design.
