An industry group for biotechnology -- one of the sectorseconomic developers often cite as a growth prospect for New Orleans -- is building a state chapter based in the city and seeking members. Called LouisianaBio, it's an affiliate of the international Biotechnology Industry Association and member of the Council of State Bioscience Associations.

The Louisiana executive director, Rhonda Melancon, said in an announcement that the group offers networking, education, legislative and public relations services and a discounted purchasing program for bioscience companies.

"By the end of year one, our members will have a far greater understanding about the work of their colleagues in other parts of the state, and beyond, which will hopefully lead to new discussions, new collaborations, and new discoveries," Melancon said in the statement.

It's based at the New Orleans BioInnovation Center on Canal Street. More information is available at http://www.LouisianaBio.org or 504.598.5239.
