The following article discusses the critical role Cardiac Care Nursing play in the community including what they do, tasks performed, work environment, qualifications to become, area of focus, training & certification, education requirements, job outlook, salary, related job titles and salary by state data.

Cardiac care nurses work in hospitals and other care facilities caring for patients that suffer from heart problems. This could mean anything from coronary artery disease or cardiac dysrhythmia to myocardial infarction or congestive heart failure. These nurses normally work under the direction of a cardiologist and care for patients before and after surgical procedures. They monitor vital signs and help patients to deal with pain and discomfort while they are healing.

CCNs monitor patients hearts and conduct health assessments before and after heart surgery. They also perform other forms of postoperative health such as stress test evaluations. They also administer medication, monitor defibrillation, and insert intravenous drips when necessary.

These nurses work closely with patients undergoing treatment for their heart or recovering from surgery. They may work in hospitals, private clinics, with home services, and in other care facilities. The military, school system, and even correctional institutions may have cardiac care nurses on staff as well.

To become a cardiac care nurse, first the status of registered nurse must be reached. This can occur through a hospital trained diploma over a period of three years, through college in the form of an associates degree in two years, or through university in a bachelor of science in nursing program over a four year period. Once this is completed a master of science in nursing must be obtained. Some colleges offer specific courses in this range of skills, while others dont. There is also very specific certification for this position, as well as the standard national licensing that all registered nurses carry.

At the moment, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics is reporting a predicted growth of 19% by the year 2022, which is 8% higher than the growth of most other positions within the U.S. The median salary for the position of registered nurse is $65,470, although a cardiac care nurse with a masters degree and all the proper certification will likely have the chance for better pay and higher placement in his or her field.

Aside from the certification gained through the registered nurse national licensing examination, once a student has completed his masteral degree in nursing, The American Board of Cardiovascular Medicine will conduct another examination. There are actually three different examinations that can be taken a non-acute cardiology care certificate, an acute cardiology care certificate, and a catheterization laboratory nurses certification.
