A recent milestone achieved by CIMS Cancer Center in Radiotherapy is the AERB approval to use FFF (Flattening Filter- Free) for clinical use. By removing the flattening filter from the linear accelerator, greater dose rate can be achieved due to the physiologic property of flat beam. Advanced treatment like SRS (Stereotactic Radio Surgery) SRT (Stereotactic Radio Therapy) and SBRT (Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for Lungs and Prostate) with use of state of art planning system can now be used to modulate non-flat, high dose rate beams to achieve highly conformal dose distributions with a reduced treatment time.

At CIMS hospital Ahmedabad a breakthrough technological surgery was performed for the first time in India on an 82 year old gentleman who had stenosis of one of the valve with heart failure, bad lungs , multiple blocks in the peripheral arteries and mild kidney disease . He had a past history of 2 times hospitalisation for heart failure symptoms in last 3 months . This heart failure was because of stenosed Heart Valve.

Only solution or treatment for this patient was to replace the valve. For valve replacement a patient has to undergo open heart surgery, wherein the heart is stopped, opened, the valve is replaced and then the heart is restarted. During this operative time, the patient is supported on Heart Lung machine.

Because of his age, poor heart function , bad lungs , and multiple blocks in arteries, it was very high risk case for open heart surgery. For such cases, a technological advanced treatment TAVI ( Trans catheter Aortic Valve Implantation) is now possible. This hybrid procedure , wherein Valve Replacement is done on beating heart ( without stopping the heart) utilised the combined skills of a heart surgeon and a Cardiologist . Procedure is done in the same way an Angioplasty is done. This procedure was successfully executed by the team of doctors of CIMS hospital: Dr Dhiren Shah (Cardiac Surgeon) Dr Milan Chag (Cardiologist), Dr Chintan Seth , Dr Hiren Dholakia ( Cardiac Anasthetist).

In todays technology driven-era and with good infrastructure hospitals, high risk patient and geriatric patients can get treatment and can get new lease of life.
