A Cardiologist is a physician who specializes in the field of cardiology, a branch of medicine that deals with disorders of the heart and blood vessels. As a physician, a cardiologist must train as a doctor before taking advanced training to become a cardiologist. The field of cardiology is divided into fields consisting of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electro-physiology. Cardiologists attend four years of medical school before going on for six to eight more years of training to specialize in cardiology. A cardiac surgeon must spend at least five years training in general surgery before starting a cardio-thoratic program. During training, cardiologists are trained to treat heart attacks, heart failure, heart disease, and serious heart rhythm disturbances. Training also prepares cardiologists to make decisions about heart catheterization, balloon angioplasty, heart surgery, and other procedures. During training, specialists must take exams to test knowledge and judgment of treatment and procedures as well as the ability to provide superior care.

All physicians are required to become board certified in their primary field of specialty. Board certification is given by the American Board of Medical Specialists to physicians who have satisfied all educational requirements and successfully completed examinations. The board also makes the decision if a candidate has received adequate training and education to practice medicine. After becoming certified in their primary field, cardiologists must also become certified in their branch of cardiology, whether cardiology, pediatric cardiology, or cardiac surgery.

Licensed cardiologists are also eligible to become a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (F.A.C.C.). The fellow is given to cardiologists who are referred to the membership based on high moral and ethical standards, as well as great contributions to the field of cardiology.

In order to begin training as a cardiologist, students must have attended a four year medical school and complete the residency and internship requirement of their medical school. Medical schools generally require a bachelors or masters degree in a science related field. Medical schools also take into consideration other undergraduate experiences other credentials and qualifications.
