WESTMINSTER Md. (WJZ)The Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Service Systems have designated Carroll Hospital Center as a Primary Stroke Center.
The designation recognizes the hospital for its ability to provide timely, coordinated strokecare and for meeting and/or exceeding the states requirements for effectively diagnosing and treating stroke patients.
Every minute during an ischemic stroke, millions of brain cells die. As a Primary Stroke Center, since patients with acute stroke symptoms will be brought to our hospital by EMS, we can now treat patients in our community faster and thereby potentially reduce disability in those stroke patients eligible for treatment, said Sandra Ruby, M.D., neurologist and medical director of Carroll Hospital Centers stroke program.
To receive the designation, the Carroll County hospitalunderwent a rigorous examination in which MIEMSS surveyors evaluated the hospitals processes, treatment plans and outcomes for stroke patients. The hospital was found to have met or exceeded the states guidelines.
