Stretched earlobes lead to trend in corrective surgery

Posted: Published on December 13th, 2014

Marie McCullough, Inquirer Staff Writer Posted: Thursday, December 11, 2014, 1:08 AM Aaron Storck was 12 when he started stretching holes in his earlobes, aspiring to be as cool as his big brother. Storck wound up with 11/2-inch-wide earlobe plugs (a.k.a. flesh tunnels, spools, flares, gauges) - bigger than bottle caps. What he didn't foresee was that he would mature, move into the work world, and rue having eye-catching ears that the staid mainstream found unappealing. Now 29, Storck, of Easton, Pa. spent $1,200 on reconstruction of his holey lobes this year. "Every now and then I miss having them," said Storck, an information technologist in Pen Argyl schools. "But when you're trying to have a serious conversation and people keep staring at your ears, it's a problem." Physicians and professional piercers agree that over the last six years, plastic surgery on enlarged earlobes has become common enough to earn a name: Earlobeplasty. Cosmetic surgeons' groups aren't yet surveying members about it, unlike procedures such as liposuction, breast implants, tattoo removal, and otoplasty (fixing protruding or defective ears). But that could change. Earlobeplasty is still new, said Gloria Gasaatura, spokeswoman for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Only time … Continue reading

Post weight-loss surgery on the rise

Posted: Published on December 5th, 2014

Abu Dhabi: An increased focus on healthier lifestyles and the greater number of hospitals offering bariatric (weight-loss) surgeries in the capital has resulted in a greater demand for related cosmetic procedures. While weight loss itself helps improve the patients health, these cosmetic procedures are often essential to help improve the patients self-image and confidence levels, medical professionals told Gulf News. We know that a successful weight-loss surgery greatly improves patients chances of keeping at bay diabetes and risk of other lifestyle diseases. But mental wellbeing is dependent very much on how the patients perceive themselves, and this is where cosmetic procedures come in, said Dr Tim Wolter, head of aesthetic and plastic surgery at multi-specialty hospital, Healthpoint Abu Dhabi. The excess skin that remains after a bariatric procedure can also impinge on the patients private lives, added Dr Jeffrey Fairley, plastic surgery consultant at Al Noor Hospital. As more and more patients opt for weight-loss procedures to improve their lives, we have also seen an exponential increase over the last decade in the number of people who come in for related cosmetic procedures. In fact, 50 per cent of the cosmetic surgeries we perform at our hospital are post-weight-loss operations, … Continue reading

Are Selfies Fueling A Plastic Surgery Boom?

Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014

Over the weekend, Reuters published a report with a modest thesis: Selfies are driving a huge demand for plastic surgery. The media seems to have largely ignored the rest of the survey's results, which tell us that selfies aren't the main reason people are opting to have more plastic surgery. The crux of the argument was based on a March report from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). The AAFPRS report included this alarmist tidbit: "33% of surgeons have seen an increase in requests for plastic surgery as a result of patients being more self aware of their looks because of social media." That's rightthe AAFPRS suggests that selfiesyour reigning Oxford English Dictionary word of the yearare the reason more Americans are going under the knife these days. Which is... strange. Reuters' trend piece, titled "Nip, tuck, click: Demand for U.S. plastic surgery rises in selfie era," does its best to build on the report and draw a direct correlation between selfies and the steady growth of the cosmetic surgery industrial complex. The post opens with an interview with a 34-year-old New York woman who recently got a nose job: "I definitely feel more comfortable right … Continue reading
