Coronary Heart Disease – Ischaemic heart disease – British …

Posted: Published on August 21st, 2018

Over time, fatty material called atheroma can build up inside the walls of your arteries. This is known as atherosclerosis. If this build up happens in the arteries that supply your heart with blood, it is called coronary heart disease. Eventually, your arteries may become so narrow because of this build up that they cannot deliver enough oxygen-rich blood to your heart. The pain and discomfort you may feel as a result of this is called angina. If a piece of atheroma breaks off it may cause a blood clot (blockage) to form. If it blocks your coronary artery and cuts off the supply of oxygen-rich blood to your heart muscle, your heart may become permanently damaged. This is known as a heart attack. A risk factor is something that increases your likelihood of getting a disease. There are several factors that can increase the risk of developing CHD. The main ones are: The more risk factors you have, the more likely you are to develop CHD. Even though you cant change all your risk factors, there is plenty you can do to reduce your risk and help to protect your heart. You can have a freeNHS health check to assess … Continue reading

Sudden Death in Dogs – Pet Health Network | Pet Health …

Posted: Published on August 7th, 2018

The tragic unexpected loss of a dog is always painful. Most of us dont think of our dogs suddenly dying with no warning, but it does occur. Understanding what happened and how it happened are a significant part of closure to our loss. In a study of autopsies performed at Purdue University Small Animal Diagnostic Laboratory1 over a five-year period, nearly 10 percent (112 cases) had been associated with sudden unexpected death. None of these dogs had a history of existing disease. Dog owners often jump to conclusions in these cases -- Somebody poisoned my dog! -- when in reality malicious poisonings are extremely uncommon and most of those suspected are inadvertent exposures. The causes found by pathologists involved: A similar survey had been published in Canada and resulted in similar figures2. Causes of Death Unfortunately, in spite of all efforts, some causes of death remain undetermined. However, it is always good to pursue a cause of death for your own peace of mind and to protect other pets. General causes of sudden death can be grouped according to the organ system involved: Toxins may also be involved but no one toxin is more likely to have caused a dogs … Continue reading

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2018

What is Ulcerative Colitis Ulcerative colitis is a disease that affects around 120,000 people in the UK and causes inflammation of the large intestine - or colon. Symptoms vary in severity from pain and discomfort, through mucous in the stools to in the most severe cases blood in the stools see the Colitis Symptoms page for more information. It is generally diagnosed by inspection of the colon by a hospital consultant - a colonoscopy. The underlying cause of ulcerative colitis is still not known - though the disease is associated with dysfunction of the immune system. In the disease the body's own T-cells attack the lining of the bowel - and hence cause it to be inflamed. The body's immune system then takes this inflammation to be a further sign of infection - increasing the immune response - in a vicious cycle. This situation is what people would term a flare-up. Ulcerative colitis is treated using a variety of medications designed to either directly reduce the inflammation - such as steroids - or to reduce the immune response such a immunomodulators. About Ulcerative Colitis As the name says the colon becomes inflamed and there is formation of ulcers on the inner lining of the colon. It mainly affects the large intestine (the colon) rather than the small intestines. The ulceration is caused by uncontrolled inflammation going on underneath the endothelial layer of the colon. The ulcers become painful and bleed profusely after every effort to pass stool. The colon becomes swollen and painful which leads to feeling of fullness and perpetual feeling of going to pass on the stools. The process of defecation becomes a nightmare for the sufferer as the stools can be explosive, full of blood, mucous or pus or everything together sometimes. Diagnosis & Treatment of Parkinson’s – ParkinsonsDisease.net

Posted: Published on May 30th, 2018

Parkinsons disease (PD) can be challenging to diagnose, particularly in early stages of the disease, and people who are suspected to have PD should be seen by a neurologist specially trained in movement disorders. Diagnosis of PD is generally made using a medical history and a physical exam or a neurological exam.1 Doctors use rating scales to assess the stage of PD in an individual. The two most commonly used rating scales are the Hoehn and Yahr scale and the Unified Parkinsons Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). The Hoehn and Yahr scale describes five stages to PD progression, while the UPDRS has four parts with multiple points in each section that are individually scored.2,3 Treatments for PD are more effective in early stages of the disease, so early detection of PD is important. In addition, physical therapy and exercise, which greatly improve symptoms and delay progression of the disease, are much easier to perform in the early stages. One of the active areas of research in PD is the search for biomarkers, clinical markers in the blood, urine, or cerebral spinal fluid that reliably detect PD. Other research focused on early detection includes looking at brain imaging tests that have high … Continue reading

13 Super Foods Good for Eczema – Top Eczema Treatments

Posted: Published on May 15th, 2018

Today I wanted to have a look at13 good foods that can help treat eczema naturally. Eczema, or Atopic Dermatitis, is a condition which causes the skin to become inflamed and irritated. While extremely common in children, still affects around 10% of the adult population totaling over 30 million people in the United States alone. Sadly, the first line of defense when one displays signs of eczema is the prescription of steroid creams. While temporarily helpful, this medication, like all medication, comes with many potential side effects with prolonged use linked to skin atrophy, adrenal suppression, stunted growth, immune suppression, Cushing syndrome, and addiction to name a few. The significant role of diet and health is widely known, however is often overlooked when it comes to naturally treating conditions such as eczema. These methods include using only natural substances and other physical or mechanical assistance to raise animals, control weeds and pests, and manage soil quality in the most ethical, natural and healthy way possible. By comparison, non-organic foods can be produced with the … Continue reading

4 Star Doody Review (July, 2011) -"This is a comprehensive source of information on the medications used for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Each chapter is divided into sections that describe the mechanism of action, the pharmacology and pharmacokinetics, and the appropriate use of each drug in cardiovascular medicine. This subdivision provides a consistent pattern that makes the book easy to use. The book offers information on medications that are currently the standard of care, new drugs in development, and alternative and complementary medications. The appendix then adds a useful resource for practical prescribing practices and drugs used in specific patient populations. This book provides a detailed assessment of the molecular biology, pharmacokinetics, and use of drug therapy in patients with cardiovascular disease. It not only provides clinical information about today's drugs, it also comments on therapeutic drugs that will revolutionize the practice of cardiovascular medicine in the future." --Mario Pascual, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation) Doody's Review Service "..recommend that medical libraries or drug information centers purchase the book." --The Annals of Pharmacotherapy "..recommend that medical libraries or drug information centers purchase the book." --The Annals of Pharmacotherapy See original here: Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapeutics: William H. Ticagrelor vs Clopidogrel After Fibrinolytic Therapy in …

Posted: Published on April 22nd, 2018

Question In patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction treated with fibrinolytic therapy, is ticagrelor noninferior to clopidogrel with respect to thrombolysis in myocardial infarction major bleeding at 30 days? Findings In this randomized clinical trial of 3799 patients, delayed administration of ticagrelor after fibrinolytic therapy was noninferior to clopidogrel for thrombolysis in myocardial infarction major bleeding at 30 days. However, minor bleeding was increased with ticagrelor and there was no benefit on efficacy outcomes. Meaning Because most of the included patients were pretreated with clopidogrel, these findings reflect mostly the noninferiority of switching from clopidogrel to ticagrelor in patients already fully loaded with clopidogrel. Importance The bleeding safety of ticagrelor in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction treated with fibrinolytic therapy remains uncertain. Objective To evaluate the short-term safety of ticagrelor when compared with clopidogrel in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction treated with fibrinolytic therapy. Design, Setting and Participants We conducted a multicenter, randomized, open-label with blinded end point adjudication trial that enrolled 3799 patients (younger than 75 years) with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction receiving fibrinolytic therapy in 152 sites from 10 countries from November 2015 through November 2017. The prespecified upper boundary for noninferiority for bleeding was an absolute margin of … Continue reading
