ABC Clockwise from top left: Sara Ramirez, Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. Grey's Anatomy is locking in its core cast members for the future. Sara Ramirez, Chandra Wilson, Justin Chambers and James Pickens Jr. have all inked new two-year deals to remain on board the ABC medical drama, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The new contracts will ensure that the quartet will remain on board the show from Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers through a potential 11th and 12th season, joining stars Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey. The latter duo signed new two-year contracts in January. PHOTOS: 'Grey's Anatomy' Cast, Creators Say Farewell to Sandra Oh Grey's Anatomy has undergone its fair share of casting changes this season. Emmy nominee Sandra Oh announced in August that she'd be departing the series at the conclusion of its 10th season. Her final episode airs May 15. Gaius Charles (Shane) and Tessa Ferrer (Leah), who boarded the show as recurring players and were promoted to series regulars ahead of season 10, will also exit this season as their contracts have not been picked up for Grey's Anatomy's expected 11th season. Oil: Anatomy of a Bubble

Posted: Published on December 16th, 2014

The word bubble, when applied to an economy or economic sector, evokes fear and loathing among financial professionals around the world. The bursting of the U.S. housing bubble in 2008 in particular left people on almost all income levels feeling battered and scarred. But this sentiment may also have created an exaggerated and irrational dread of bubbles call it bubblephobia. Bubbles are natural market phenomena. As markets allocate capital to various users, reason is inevitably overtaken by emotional factors. Careful analysis is brushed aside by greed. And as markets become increasingly overheated, herd mentality and groupthink force capitulation, opening the floodgates wide in the capital allocation process. And then the bubble bursts! The bubble du jour is oil. The oil bubble burst this summer. A couple of months later, oil prices started to crash. Investor capitulation to supply-tilted price momentum is now provoking across-the-board selling and accelerating the slide. The ripple effects of oil as a socio-economic meteor are now being felt throughout the global economy. The oil bubble was triggered by two broad interrelated factors. One factor was change in oils supply/demand equation. The second was the adoption of oil as a store of financial value. Many factors contributed … Continue reading

Anatomy of another comeback win

Posted: Published on December 16th, 2014

PHILADELPHIA - They did it again. As one reader comment in The Sunday Commercial Appeal cleverly suggested, perhaps the Grizzlies need to arrive to games with a disclaimer that gives notice to opponents. WARNING: No lead is safe. When the Grizzlies wiped out an 18-point, fourth-quarter deficit Saturday night and beat the Philadelphia Sixers 120-115 in overtime it marked their 12th comeback victory over the past six regular seasons when trailing by 17 points or more. Mike Conleys career-high 36 points kept the Griz as the most successful team in the NBA when faced with such a deficit during that span, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Diehard Griz fans will also remember Jan. 28, 2011 when Memphis rallied from down 21 points and beat Philadelphia in Wells Fargo Center. It lets you know this team is resilient. This team is mentally tough, said Conley, who is averaging 23.6 points over the past five games. Earlier this season, the Grizzlies also stunned the Sacramento Kings by erasing a 26-point deficit Nov. 13 to earn the largest comeback win in franchise history. Memphis string of never-say-die stories began in 2009 when the Big Three (Conley, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol) came together. … Continue reading

Road safety must be concentrated on improving driver behaviour

Posted: Published on December 16th, 2014

Road crash statistics are bleak, impersonal measurements, stripped of any character or human loss. Behind the figures lie broken lives and family tragedies that are too often ignored by those who drive dangerously, drink to excess and ignore the rules of the road. Articles in this newspaper, entitled Anatomy of a Car Crash by Peter Murtagh, provided insights into the ripple effects a fatal crash can have on family, friends, medical personnel, garda and mortuary staff. Tracing such causes and outcomes may, hopefully, contribute to safer roads during the Christmas season. Last year, the Road Safety Authority warned that killer behaviour was re-emerging amongmotorists, after years of improving driver performances and a declining number of crashes. The introduction of penalty points for a variety of offences, random breath checks and more visible and active policing all contributed to a reduction in the road carnage that had blighted many communities over decades. Road fatalities declined from 279 in 2008 to 162 in 2012, but increased again to 190 in 2013. So far this year, 184 people have died and there appears little chance that the Government will deliver on its road safety strategy and cut the number of deaths to 124 … Continue reading
