If you want scoop on a specific show, send your questions to spoilerroom@ew.com. Can you tease how Amelia will fit in on Greys Anatomy next season? Carla How shell fit into Grey Sloan will all depend on whether or not Derek takes the D.C. job, which causes some frustrating complications, executive producer Shonda Rhimes tells me. But Amelia will make a surprising connection at the hospital, just not with who youd think. Theres a moment early on when she finds herself the keeper of some secrets that Richard didnt necessarily want her to know by being at an AA meeting that he didnt know she was at, Rhimes says. It draws her into the world in a deeper way than she anticipated. Hmm, I wonder what that secret could be. Got any New Girl scoop? Tonya Now that Jess is the vice principal at school, she has to hire a teacher to replace her and she ends up falling for him. The complication is … Continue reading

My Salinger Year Joanna Rakoff Bloomsbury Memoir Rs 399 An ode not to the reclusive writer, but to the very act of writing itself August 22, 2014: We all have to start somewhere, begins My Salinger Year, Joanna Rakoffs memoir of the year she worked in a New York literary agency. The Agency, which remains unnamed in the book, is Harold Ober Associates and it represents one of the most reclusive writers of modern times, JD Salinger. What Rakoff is starting is her career, as the Bright Young Associate, The Girl Friday to her boss, who is also unnamed in the book but is only two clicks away from being revealed as legendary literary agent Phyllis Westberg. Rakoff perhaps planned to start elsewhere. She had completed her masters in English Literature at Oxford and told her college boyfriend that what she wanted to do was write poetry, not analyse those of others. But where she found herself was in New York, nearly broke and living with Don, a socialist and aspiring writer with an unapologetic roving eye. Even though the year is 1996, the Agency is stuck in a time many decades past. On her first day at work, Rakoff … Continue reading

Lac-Mgantic derailment: Anatomy of a disaster
Posted: Published on August 19th, 2014
The Transportation Safety Board examined the complex series of events leading to last years derailment in Lac-Mgantic that killed 47 people. The events included a faulty repair on the lead locomotives engine, a lack of sufficient handbrakes, weak safety training for Montreal, Maine & Atlantic staff and a failure of federal oversight. Heres a timeline based on details in the 191-page report. Engine Repair: About nine months before the accident, MM&A performed a low-cost non-standard repair on the engine in the trains lead locomotive. The repair used a material that wasnt strong enough for the job and eventually failed, leading to a series of other problems in the engine and an accumulation of oil in the turbocharger and exhaust manifold. Engine Troubles: Two days before the crash in Lac-Mgantic, an engineer reported trouble with the locomotives engine on a separate trip. Despite that concern, the locomotive was put at the head of the train bound for Nantes on July 5, 2013. Engineer Tom Harding noticed that the engine was surging, making it difficult to keep up a consistent pace. By the time he arrived in Nantes, it was spewing smoke and oil droplets his taxi driver noticed them landing on … Continue reading

'Grey's Anatomy': Ellen Pompeo's simple reason why Meredith can't go to D.C.
Posted: Published on August 16th, 2014
Now that most of the Fab Five have left Grey Sloan Memorial, it seems the time could be ripe for Meredith to finally move on from the hospital shes called home for the last 10 seasons of Greys Anatomydespite telling Derek she didnt want to move to Washington, D.C. in the season finale. However, Ellen Pompeo thinks theres a very plausible reason why Meredith cannot follow her husband to Capitol Hill. Obviously, Meredith and Derek cant go anywhere, because the show cant be in Washington, because then I would know that my parents are really alive and living in the White House and that might piss Meredith off if she goes and sees that Ellis and Thatcher both faked their deaths, Pompeo tells EW with a hearty laugh. The actress is, of course, referring to Greys alums Kate Burton and Jeff Perry both starring on one of executive producer Shonda Rhimes other Thursday night dramas, Scandal, which is not set in the same universe as the ABC medical drama and its spin-off Private Practice. (For the record, Burton will reprise her role as the late Ellis Grey in the season premiere to help unfold the mystery behind Mers new half-sister.) … Continue reading
