3D-Printed Anatomy May Replace Cadavers For Medical Training

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2014

Alan McStravick for redOrbit.com Your Universe online Three-dimensional printing may soon replace human cadavers in the study of gross human anatomy in the worlds medical schools. The practice of learning on medical cadavers is a rite of passage in the medical education community that is instrumental in informing students on the complex inner workings of the muscular, skeletal and circulatory systems of the human body. Medical schools rely on good-natured individuals who bequeath their bodies for the advancement of science for their supply of study cadavers. Despite the obvious benefits of cadaver use in the education process, some medical schools are unable or unwilling to engage in the practice. This could either be because they lack the facilities for the cost-prohibitive process of properly storing the body or because the school is in a region that frowns on the practice for cultural reasons. Only a couple of years ago, these issues were insurmountable. Today, however, we have the steady march of technology to thank for the education of future physicians. Experts from Australias Monash University have developed a new training kit that consists of anatomical body parts all created by the relatively new practice of 3D printing. This innovation will … Continue reading

3D printed anatomy to mark a new era for medical training

Posted: Published on July 15th, 2014

The creators of a unique kit containing anatomical body parts produced by 3D printing say it will revolutionize medical education and training, especially in countries where cadaver use is problematical. The '3D Printed Anatomy Series', developed by experts from Monash University, is thought to be the first commercially available resource of its kind. The kit contains no human tissue, yet it provides all the major parts of the body required to teach anatomy of the limbs, chest, abdomen, head and neck. Professor Paul McMenamin, Director of the University's Centre for Human Anatomy Education, said the simple and cost-effective anatomical kit would dramatically improve trainee doctors' and other health professionals' knowledge and could even contribute to the development of new surgical treatments. "For centuries cadavers bequested to medical schools have been used to teach students about human anatomy, a practice that continues today. However many medical schools report either a shortage of cadavers, or find their handling and storage too expensive as a result of strict regulations governing where cadavers can be dissected," he said. "Without the ability to look inside the body and see the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels, it's incredibly hard for students to understand human anatomy. … Continue reading

Debora Cahn, who was a longtime writer/consulting producer on ABCs Greys Anatomy, has been tapped to pen Coronado High for Columbia Pictures. George Clooney and Grant Heslov are producing via their Smokehouse banner, as is David Klawans. LIST Hollywood's 100 Favorite Films Coronado High is based on an article by Joshua Bearman, the same journalist whose article for Wired became the basis for the Oscar-winning movie Argo (which Clooney and Heslov produced with Ben Affleck). Bearman's Coronado piece, first published on the Atavist, told of how starting in 1969, a hippie teacher in the sleepy naval beach town of Coronado, Calif., and some high school students came up with the idea of smuggling pot from Mexico via swimming and paddling surfboards. Out of that rose a 1970s criminal empire, one that was eventually taken down by the DEA. PHOTOS'Grey's Anatomy' Cast, Creators Say Farewell to Sandra Oh Cahn started her screenwriting career as a staff scribe on The West Wing, even winning a WGA award. She wrote The Special Program, which was near the top of last years Black List.
