New Imaging Tool Gives 3-D View Of Patients' Anatomy | Scope Blog – Scope (blog)

Posted: Published on March 1st, 2017

A new computer program is helpingsurgeons viewtheir patients medical scans in three dimensions, enabling better planning for surgeries on people with unusual anatomy. The program can transform a series of two-dimensionalCT or MRI scans into a 3-D image that surgeons can rotate, examine, cut and reassemble from any angle, helping them anticipate exactly what theyll see at every stage of surgery. For a recent story, cardiothoracic surgeon Katsuhide Maeda, MD, who led the first procedure using the technologyat Lucile Packard Childrens Hospital Stanford, told me why it was helpful to view patient Gina Milners cardiothoracic anatomy in three dimensions before her heart valve replacement surgery: For patients with very complex anatomy and a lot of variation from the normal cardiac structure, 3-D technologies are really helpful, said Maeda Milner, 46, was born with a heart defect called tetralogy of Fallot that was repaired in childhood, placing her in the group of patients for whom standard 2-D imaging may not give surgeons the information they want. It can sometimes be very hard to understand how to put a path through the heart, Maeda said. Milner had been referred to the hospitals Adult Congenital Heart Program when her physicians determined that she … Continue reading

Grey's Anatomy Recap: All Stirred Up – Vulture

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2017

Jessica Capshaw as Arizona, James Pickens Jr. as Webber. Photo: Eric McCandless/ABC Back Where You Belong Season 13 Episode 14 Editor's Rating 3 stars If youve read even one of these Greys Anatomy recaps, you know that my fuse is short when it comes to Jo Wilson. Does it make me cold and unfeeling if I admit to spending the majority of Back Where You Belong yelling at Jo whenever she appeared onscreen? Listen, I am not making light of the terrible things she has endured. The girl has had it rough. BUT COME ON. You are a doctor, lady. When your patient is in trouble, you set aside your feelings no matter how valid they may be and you save that patients life. I feel like that must be the No. 1 rule of doctorhood. At least top five. Of course, it wasnt surprising that this happened. Jo makes everything about herself! When shes put on a mother-son kidney transplant and her patients abusive father shows up uninvited to the life-saving party, its only a matter of time until she makes this about her own tragic situation. After the transplant goes awry and the abusive jerk of a father, … Continue reading

Getty Images Randy Holmes / ABC Katherine Heigl's newest series, Doubt, has been cancelled after just TWO episodes. Yikes! Two episodes hardly seems like enough time to pass judgement, but it seems like CBS had seen enough, according to TVLine and already have a replacement filling its slot. The former Grey's Anatomy star was leading an all-star cast that included the likes of Laverne Cox and Dule Hill and it was forecast to be a hit, but ratings have bombed something sharpish. CBS has not made a decision when or if the further 11 episodes will air. The actress was tweeting about the show on Thursday (February 23) after the second episode aired and all seemed fine then. Oh how things have changed. Elsewhere, she and husband Josh Kelley welcomed their first son, Joshua Bishop Kelley, on December 20. The couple are already parents to two adopted daughters and now big sisters 8-year-old Naleigh and 4-year-old Adelaide. 'Grey's Anatomy' tackles abusive relationships & Jo finally breaks – Screener

Posted: Published on February 25th, 2017

Greys Anatomy has never shied away from tackling heavy topics and on Thursday nights (Feb. 23), episode entitled Back Where You Belong, a seemingly simple kidney transplant from a loving mother to her ailing son Chris, quickly turned into a much darker situation when the boys father shows up And bothmother and son instantly recoil with a combination of fear and anger at his sudden presence. RELATED:Everythings falling apart without Meredith as the great Grey-Sloan civil war escalates As the doctors learn, the two patients fled almost a year prior, after years of domestic abuse, when the womans husband finally went after their son. A divorce precluded by the fact that theyve been hiding all the while, her son getting sicker means thattechnically none of the Grey-Sloan staff can force the man to leave the hospital. Though Jo (Camilla Luddington) couldnt have known any of this when she sweetly led the man into his victims hospital room, she quickly goes into a downward spiral of panic, guilt and PTSD from her own abuse. The Anatomy of Anthony Bourdain's Lovers – Inquirer.net

Posted: Published on February 25th, 2017

Anthony Bourdain has reached the point of popularity wherepeople meddle with his personal life. I mean, its not just the food and his commentaries anymore. People like to know and dig deeper. Last year, when Anthony split up with his wife Ottavia after 10 years, people were affected. Especially to find out that the reason behind it was because they just made different choices in lifeOttavia her MMA career and Anthony with his life as a chef, TV show host, and an author. This time around people are talking about the new woman in Anthony Bourdains lifeAsia Argentowhom he met when he shot last seasons Parts Unknown. Asia toured Anthony on the outskirts of Rome where they visited her local grocery store and ate lots of pasta. And I guess in between takes, they fell in love. It got us curious though, what is Anthony Bourdains type in women? His ex-wife Ottavia lived in a small town in Lombardy, Italy while his new girl Asia was born in the city of Rome. Italian women are known to consume copious amounts of carbs and still look good (ha, I wish I lived their lives) and they are also known to be … Continue reading

'Grey's Anatomy' recap: 'Back Where You Belong' – EW.com

Posted: Published on February 23rd, 2017

The band is back together again! Not quite, Maggie, but youve got the right idea. Amelia, whos back at Casa de Meredith for who knows how long, insists that shes not back, shes just sleeping there (a.k.a. shes still just hiding from Owen). But the good news is that after being sidelined from last weeks episode, Alex is officially free of his legal troubles and ready to get back to work. Unfortunately, we cant say the same for Meredith since shes still suspended from the hospital for butting heads with Bailey. Still, the show must go on. At the hospital, Eliza has come to the conclusion that, following last weeks mishap in the OR, maybe the residents arent exactly ready for phase two of her master plan. So shes taking things easy this week and pairing the residents up with attendings, and Stephanie and Jo are with Alex. Speaking of Alex, he begins his first day back by dealing with a little family drama: His procedure of the day is a mother-to-son kidney transplant with Cynthia (mother) and Chris (son), but things get off to a rocky start when Chris father shows up to the hospital uninvited as the two … Continue reading

Anatomy Of A Day In The Mavs' Trade-Deadline Life – Scout

Posted: Published on February 23rd, 2017

Trade Talk. Cap Gymnastics. A Surprise Phone Call. A Short-Handed Scrimmage. It's All Part Of 'The Anatomy Of A Day In The Mavs' Trade-Deadline Life.' The first soon-to-be-public domino topples innocuously enough, with Dallas Mavericks rookie center AJ Hammons showing up for work in Frisco, expecting to be a starter for Wednesday nights D-League game between the Mavs affiliate the Texas Legends vs. the LA D-Fenders. At 3:36, I receive a text. Hammons is being recalled by the Mavs today. And right about at this time, Legends coach Bob MacKinnon contacts Hammons. Youre going downtown, MacKinnon tells the kid. I ask a Mavs staffer if Hammons hurry-up drive south down the Tollway (a move made official at 3:49) had anything to do with the possibility of a trade-deadline-centered Dallas roster shuffle. You could surmise that, yes, he tells me. And then comes a Mavs practice. (It is suggested to me that the workout is largely a scrimmage, and that coach Rick Carlisle will supervise another scrimmage on Thursday as the team comes back from its All-Star Break and preps for a Friday game at Minnesota and a Saturday AAC meeting with Boogie Cousins Pelicans). And it is a Mavs practice … Continue reading
