'Grey's Anatomy' Star Justin Chambers on Karev's Fate: 'He Just Never Seems to Catch a Break' – Variety
Posted: Published on February 14th, 2017
Last weeks Greys Anatomy revealed the fate of Alex Karev (Justin Chambers). After numerous episodes this season dealt with the aftermath of Karev beating up DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti), Alex had decided to accept a plea deal, which would put him behind bars. However, he had gone missing and no one knew what he was up to until last week when suddenly, he surprised Meredith at home. The episode last week cut with Karevs surprise return home, begging the question, how did he get out of jail time? Tonights ep will reveal all of those details. But first,Variety chatted with Chambers aboutwhat to expect now that Alex is back. I think having everything taken from him I think he learned a lot there, but I think he appreciates being in peace and hes very good at what he does and he thrives there, Chambers explains of how the experience will change Alex. As for Jo (Camilla Luddington), their relationship will require a lot of work to get back on track. He was going to take a plea deal to protect his girl. Theyre not together right now, but well see where that goes, Chambers says.Hes still angry with her, but if … Continue reading

The New ABCs of Medical School: Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Cooking – Food Tank (blog)
Posted: Published on February 12th, 2017
As Hippocrates, the founder of modern medicine, spoke, Let food be thy medicine. However, most medical schools in the United States do not adequately teach nutrition. Several programs, including at Tulane University, are addressing this shortcoming by including cooking classes in their curriculum. The hope is that by teaching future doctors how to cook delicious and healthy meals, they will pass that knowledge on to their patients, improving long-term health. The rates of obesity and obesity-related diseases are increasing throughout the world according to Prediabetes: A Worldwide Epidemic. The Center for Disease Control reports that nearly half of all deaths in the United States are due to heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes. Entire scientific journals, such as Nutrition and Health, Diabetes, and the Journal of Nutrition, are devoted to examining the relationships between nutrition and health. Research has shown that nutrition is one of the leading causes of and significantly affects the management of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and aging-related diseases. There is no clear correlation between policy recommendations and nutrition choices. For example, a study that provided nutrition information to adults at fast-food chains found that simply providing information did not alter consumer choices. Coaching has consistently proven effective at … Continue reading

I would say Im curvy and sporty. Has your body type changed over the last five years? Absolutely, and for the better! I feel a more positive and healthier change in my body. How has your style changed over the years? Its more fusion now, and a lot more versatile. I tend to wear tunics, which can easily blend with both Eastern and Western ensembles. Blocking traffic has the added benefit of annoying constituentstheyre inconvenienced, and thats partly the point. In this case, they would be inconvenienced specifically because their representative was too much of a weasel to face her or his constituents at a town hall. Can you imagine shutting down main streettraffic in a relatively small town with a banner reading: Rep. X, why wont you speak to us? or Rep. X, why wont you protect our health insurance? or Rep. X, dont you dare take away ourSocial Security and Medicare. Its especially bad optics for a representative who hasnt been willing to face voters since Republicans took control of the government. Another option is catching someone guerilla-style at a relatively informalevent like a bake saleor a barbeque or even at the grocery store. The key is to ask for something concrete and to have someone with a recording device as simple as a phone (and hopefully a steady hand!) to capture the exchange. Practice makes perfect. DREAM activists made national headlines in 2014 when they confronted Hillary Clinton at Tom Harkins annual steak fry. You may not make national headlines with something that simple, but you can probably make local headlines. And … Continue reading

Super Bowl LI pain train: Anatomy of Falcons' collapse – NFL.com
Posted: Published on February 11th, 2017
I never thought I'd live to see a loss as crushing as the Packers' 28-22 heartbreaker against the Seahawks in the 2014 NFC Championship Game. Then Super Bowl LI happened. Back when Aaron Rodgers and Co. failed to close out Seattle, I viewed it as -- when factoring in the stakes and the degree of difficulty necessary to blow it -- the worst playoff loss in NFL history. The day after the game, I wrote a piece breaking down the eight plays that doomed the Packers. I'll run that exercise back for the 2016 Falcons. If Atlanta has a favorable outcome in any of the situations below, they probably have a Lombardi Trophy right now. A warning that this is not for the faint of heart. We learned Wednesday that Falcons defensive coordinator Richard Smith would not return in his role with the team next season. It was a reminder of how savage pro football can be as a business. Three days earlier, Smith was pitching the coordinator equivalent of a perfect game, holding Tom Brady and the Patriots to a measly field goal midway through the third quarter. And now the Pats were opting to go for it on … Continue reading

Maggie Finally Gets the Spotlight on Grey's Anatomy and It's a Giant Bummer – Cosmopolitan.com
Posted: Published on February 11th, 2017
When I found out that Maggie's mother was going to show up on Grey's Anatomy, I was a little sulky about it at first. Why is Grey's always trotting out new guest stars? Why do the characters we've fallen in love with disappear forever? I know the answer to that second question is, "Because a whole bunch of them are dead and a few more of their performers are dead to Shonda." Still, it's a little bittersweet to meet Maggie's mom when who I'd really love to see again are family members like Derek's mother or sister or ex-wife. Or Teddy! Or Mama Burke. And the list goes on and on. I am 100% aware that this is almost entirely Trump-induced "Sure wish things were the way they used to be!" melancholy, but I stand by it. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below That said, I ended up liking Maggie's mother, Diane, just fine, and not just because she's played by the inimitable LaTanya Richardson Jackson. It's always exciting to learn a little more about Maggie, who I still feel like I only know between three to five facts about, in spite of the fact that this is her third season … Continue reading

Inside the Linguistic Anatomy of the Perfect Trump Insult – New York Magazine
Posted: Published on February 11th, 2017
Ad will collapse in seconds CLOSE February 10, 2017 02/10/2017 12:10 p.m. By Drake Baer Share Donald Trump may hate his new job and be surprised to find hes not a dictator, but he is delivering on one campaign promise: innovation. At least in swearing. The embattled new president is something of a muse for political obscenity. Consider the curious case of shit-gibbon, chronicled by linguist par excellence Ben Zimmer, in a new post at Strong Language, a sweary blog about swearing. The expletive exploded this week thanks to Pennsylvania state senator Daylin Leach. The public servant took umbrage when Trump joked of destroying the career of a Texas state senator who wanted to curb the police practice of asset forfeiture. Hey @realDonaldTrump I oppose civil asset forfeiture too! Leach tweeted. Why dont you try to destroy my career you fascist, loofa-faced, shit-gibbon! The response to the tweet has been beyond anything I could have imagined, the lawmaker said Thursday. Though loofa-faced is a gem, the operative word here is shit-gibbon. Zimmer, doing the Lords work, traces the insults trajectory. Where could Leach have alighted upon such a life-affirming insult? Why, naturally, the land of curses: Scotland. As you may … Continue reading

Anatomy as Art: Installation #19 – in-Training
Posted: Published on February 10th, 2017
Anatomy as Art: Installation #19 unknown artists ink and pencil on index card For the majority of medical students, gross anatomy is the first time that we observe and cut into the flesh of preserved cadavers. Whether it is through a longitudinal year-round program or a semesters worth of concentrated anatomy, most of us develop a unique relationship with the cadaver gifted to us by generous donors. At Albany Medical College, upon our orientation to gross anatomy, we are asked to draw our feelings on blank index cards prior toentering the cadaver laboratory. As we progress through the year, our sentiments regarding anatomy may remain the same, or may change, and these drawings allow us to look back at this milestone we crossed as budding medical students. It is with the permission of the director of gross anatomy at Albany Medical College, Dr. Leon Martino, that we host the Anatomy as Art series to showcase these illustrations. Medical Student Editor and in-Training Staff Member Albany Medical College Nita Chen is a Class of 2017 medical student at Albany Medical College. To become cultural, she spent her early educational years in Taiwan and thoroughly enjoyed wonderful Taiwanese food and milk tea, … Continue reading
