Though Maggie (Kelly McCreary) arrived at Grey Sloan Memorial long after the hospital shootingboth of themthe bomb in the body, and the plane crash, shell get her first taste of danger during Thursdays episode of Greys Anatomy when she gets sucker punched by a patient. The best part, for me, was that the patient who punches Maggie is the dad from The Wonder Years, Dan Lauria, McCreary tells EW. I had my first total fan girl, geek-out moment while we were shooting because I loved that show as a kid. I was like, As long as its Dan Lauria, sure. Go right ahead, punch me in the face. The incident ends up being a big turning point for Maggie. It turns out to be this reallyfor lack of a better wordstriking moment in the episode where you figure out what the problem with this patient is, McCreary says. Im working on a case with Ben [Jason George] and Richard [James Pickens Jr.] involving a patient who exhibits signs of Alzheimers and Maggie winds up having an epic foot in her mouth moment where she gets on the familys case for not keeping the patient out of danger. This, of course, … Continue reading

First public anatomy lectures planned in the UK since Burke and Hare

Posted: Published on March 18th, 2015

Edinburgh University is offering six workshops in a dissection laboratory, beginning next month with instruction on the upper limb. Later events will move on to the lower limb, the nervous system and back, the chest, abdomen, pelvis and head and neck. Dissection was done publicly. You could buy tickets. For some it was entertainment, but for others it was a way of feeding curiosity and finding out what was going on. "People remember the sordid bit about Dr Knox and Burke and Hare, but a lot of the work that was done at that time was seminal for modern medicine. "Their history has stopped public access for many years now, but a redrafting of the law with the Human Tissue (Scotland) Act 2006, has allowed a more accessible approach to anatomy departments and that's what we're taking advantage of and starting to reopen access to the public. Prof Gillingwater said the classes were aimed at people with reasons to study anatomy, and would allow people to handle arms, but not to carry out dissections. All applicants for the workshops will be vetted, and Prof Gillingwater said applications had already come from school pupils hoping to study medicine, as well as … Continue reading

Public dissection will be first since days of Burke and Hare

Posted: Published on March 18th, 2015

NC Cadavers will form part of public lectures in Edinburgh with a series of six workshops beginning next month. The lectures will feature the dissection of a real human arm to get under the skin to the real flesh and bones of anatomy. The day-long sessions, which cost 100 each, are the first to be held in the city since its medical school was embroiled in the murder spree committed by William Hare and William Burke. The pair suffocated 16 victims, who were sold to the medical school for around 7 each. In 1832 the Anatomy Act was passed, banning public dissections. But the passing of the Human Tissue (Scotland) Act, 2006, has paved the way for universities to revive public anatomy lectures as long as they deal ethically and appropriately with human remains. Edinburgh Universitys Professor Thomas Gillingwater, the academic behind the project, said: If you go back to the early 1800s, the public were more clued up on anatomy than they are now. Back then, dissection was done publicly. You could buy tickets. For some it was entertainment, but for others it was a way of feeding curiosity and finding out what was going on. He added: We … Continue reading

By YUN SOO KIM Student advocacy group Vox: Voices for Planned Parenthood launched the Know Your Body campaign this week to reduce the stigma surrounding issues of reproductive anatomy, sexual health. Co-sponsored by the Cornell Womens Resource Center, the campaign aims to encourage Cornellians to have conversations about sexually transmitted diseases, birth control, sexual pleasure and consent, according to Vox President Cassidy Clark 17. Why is it that as soon as the words vagina, gynecologist or birth control are mentioned, voices immediately become hushed and people look around to make sure no one heard them say such a thing? -Lauren Cooley 17 There is no good reason for students to feel uncomfortable discussing these issues, said Lauren Cooley 17, vice president of Vox. Why is it that as soon as the words vagina, gynecologist or birth control are mentioned, voices immediately become hushed and people look around to make sure no one heard them say such a thing? asked Lauren Cooley 17. The taboo nature of these topics is absolutely unnecessary. Additionally, the stigma surrounding these issues can prevent students from being informed, according to Clark.
