Grey's Anatomy: Was Dr. Herman's Operation a Success?
Posted: Published on March 7th, 2015
So, did it work? When we left off with Grey's Anatomy last week, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) was about to tackle the biggest case of her life: removing a potentially fatal tumor from Dr. Hermann's (Geena Davis) brain. "A surgeon must always be prepared to lose," we hear Amelia say in a foreboding voiceover at the start of the hour, before she brushes off a concerned Owen (Kevin McKidd) in order to give herself her own pep talks in the bathroom mirror, briefly break down, and then assume the stance of a superhero in the scrub room. VIDEO: How well does the cast of Grey's Anatomy know medical jargon? With a full gallery of onlookers staring at her and Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) by her side narrating, Amelia takes a deep breath, starts the clock and begins the operation. Up in the box, Maggie (Kelly McCreary), speaking for all of us viewers at home, casually wonders where the appeal is in watching what could potentially be the worst day of someone's life. But it's also a learning process, and thanks to a cool green dye, we and the observing doctors get to see just how massive Dr. Herman's tumor is. Welcome to … Continue reading

Does 'Grey's Anatomy' still need Derek Shepherd?
Posted: Published on March 7th, 2015
Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) has been missing from "Grey's Anatomy" since the winter premiere. He's only in D.C., working on a top secret project for the president, and no one's forgotten he exists, but it's time to start asking a bigger question -- does "Grey's" need him to come back? After Amelia Shepherd's (Caterina Scorsone) huge surgery win on Thursday's (March 5) episode, no, it probably doesn't. Amelia reached a terrifying moment during her surgery on Herman's (Geena Davis) brain tumor, where she asked for her brother to come save her. He didn't come back, and she survived. Herman survived. The show goes on. While Amelia begging for Derek was mostly intended to establish that Amelia as a character doesn't need her big brother to save her, it also serves a metaphor for "Grey's" as a whole. For 10 seasons Derek Shepherd was an anchor of the show. In the early seasons the "will they/won't they" status of his relationship with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) kept viewers tuning in. Now that the Shepherd family has moved from resident and attending to owning Grey Sloan Memorial -- does "Grey's" still need McDreamy to keep going? If "Grey's" is willing to tackle a … Continue reading
