Blood vessel – Wikipedia
Posted: Published on July 12th, 2018
"Vascular" redirects here. For information about plants, see Vascular plant. The blood vessels are the part of the circulatory system, and microcirculation, that transports blood throughout the human body.[1] There are three major types of blood vessels: the arteries, which carry the blood away from the heart; the capillaries, which enable the actual exchange of water and chemicals between the blood and the tissues; and the veins, which carry blood from the capillaries back toward the heart. The word vascular, meaning relating to the blood vessels, is derived from the Latin vas, meaning vessel. A few structures (such as cartilage and the lens of the eye) do not contain blood vessels and are labeled. The arteries and veins have three layers. The middle layer is thicker in the arteries than it is in the veins: Capillaries consist of little more than a layer of endothelium and occasional connective tissue. When blood vessels connect to form a region of diffuse vascular supply it is called an anastomosis. Anastomoses provide critical alternative routes for blood to flow in case of blockages. There is a layer of muscle surrounding the arteries and the veins which help contract and expand the vessels. This creates … Continue reading

TRUE DISCOVERY AWAITS It takes a certain mind to go in search of true discovery. In nuclear medicine, they are the clinical researchers looking to set new standards of care, the practitioners working to deliver better outcomes for the patients they see every day and the cardiologists seeking a better understanding of the heart. While they all have the same goal, their needs are different and cant all be met with one system or technology. Nuclear medicine is an excellent choice for physicians at the forefront of medicine. It has a wide range of available radioisotopes with various energy emission levels and longer half-lives. It also has the flexibility to explore multiple pathways in a single session. These are some of the reasons why we made a commitment to realizing the full potential of and growing this modality. This commitment involves making nuclear medicine technology more accessible and enabling it to provide results that are more valuable to referring physicians. It means driving down daily operational costs and innovating in four key areas: image quality, dose reduction, exam speeds and quantitative applications. All with the end result of enabling better clinical and economic outcomes. It also includes our vision for … Continue reading

The Childrens Heart Program is committed to providing comprehensive cardiac care for children, from fetal life into adulthood, with congenital heart disease, and for children with acquired heart disease. Our mission is to expand our services to meet the diverse needs of those in the state of Maryland, so that no one needs to leave the state to seek heart care. A wide spectrum of cardiology subspecialties and services are offered here at the University of Maryland Childrens Hospital including: The program offers cardiac evaluations using the most advanced technology to diagnose and treat structural and functional cardiac abnormalities. In October 2010, the Childrens Heart Program opened the Pediatric Hybrid Cardiac Catheterization Suite. This state-of-the-art suite is the first of its kind in the mid-Atlantic region. The hybrid suite serves as both a fully dedicated pediatric cardiac catheterization laboratory and surgical suite. Cardiac catheterization is a diagnostic test that seeks to acquire additional information about the structure and function of a persons heart. Some cardiac catheterization procedures also allow the interventional cardiologist to improve or even fix an underlying heart defect. Procedures include: State-of-the-art cardiac MRI technology is available to non-invasively diagnose even the most complex forms of congenital heart … Continue reading

Although cerebral palsy (CP) has no known cure yet, there are amyriad of treatments that have been proven successful in helping those with CP live more productively. If youre the parent of a child or infant with CP, its important to understand what treatment options are available in order to determine what will work best for you. CP is a wide-spectrum disorder, ranging from mild to severe, and treatment will depend upon your childs individual circumstances. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, getting a child with CP involved in physical therapy is one of the most important things you can do for treatment of the disorder. Physical therapy involves rehabilitating the childs physical disabilities through a series of muscle training. Since each childs situation is unique, a professional physical therapist will typically perform an assessment, and based upon its findings, individualized physical therapy plans will follow. Common exercises included in physical therapy sessions include: In some instances, children with CP will have swimming therapy during their physical therapy sessions. These sessions are done with careful assistance and caution, but are extremely important as it allows children to utilize muscle groups and do therapeutic exercises they otherwise arent able to … Continue reading

By Sonya G. Gordon, DVM, DVSc, DACVIM (Cardiology), Associate Professor, Department of Small Animal Clinical Science, Texas A and M University Ashley B. Saunders, DVM, DACVIM (Cardiology), Associate Professor of Cardiology, College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Texas A and M University Diuretics are the cornerstone of therapy in management of animals with congestive heart failure (CHF) characterized by cardiogenic pulmonary edema, pleural effusion, ascites, or a combination of these signs. Three classes of diuretics are used to treat CHF in dogs and cats: loop diuretics, thiazide diuretics, and potassium-sparing diuretics. They differ in their relative potency and mechanisms of action. The loop diuretics are the most potent and have a high ceiling, enabling them to be used in a dose-dependent way to treat mild to life-threatening CHF. Additionally, they can be administered orally or parenterally. Thiazide diuretics are mild to moderate in potency. They are typically used in conjunction with a loop diuretic (eg, furosemide) in animals with severe refractory CHF. Historically, the use of potassium-sparing diuretics (eg, spironolactone) has been reserved for those animals that have right heart failure or have become hypokalemic secondary to the use of other diuretics, or for those animals refractory to other … Continue reading

Parkinsons Disease is a disorder in which sufferers lose most control of their motor skills.According to the Parkinsons Disease Foundation, more than 10 million people across the globe are affected by Parkinsons. Well give you the rundown on the disease, how its typically treated, and the shocking effectiveness of cannabis on those who suffer from Parkinsons Disease. Parkinsons is an incurable disease which affects the central nervous system. The disorder causes cell death in a part of the brain that is responsible for motor control. As a result, movement becomes slow and rigid, and sufferers experience tremor and instability. This frequently results in an increase in falls, which are a source of danger for sufferers of the disease. While the cause of Parkinsons is unknown, experts believe that a combination of genetics and environment play a role in its development. For example, those with a family memberwith Parkinsons Diseaseare more likely to have the disease themselves. Additionally, those who are in contact with certain pesticides, and those who have suffered head injuries, are also at increased risk. Along with less motor control, Parkinsons Diseasecan also manifest neurological symptoms. These may include: Because Parkinsons Diseaseis incurable, treatment revolves around managing the … Continue reading

Treatment for ulcerative colitis depends on how severe the condition is and how often your symptoms flare up. This willusually involve taking various types of medication, although surgery may sometimes be an option. Your treatment will normally be provided by a range of healthcare professionals, including specialist doctors (such as gastroenterologists or surgeons), GPs and specialist nurses. Your care will often be co-ordinated by your specialist nurse and your care team, and they will usually be your main point of contact if you need help and advice. Treatment options are discussed in more detail below. Aminosalicylates Aminosalicylates (5-ASAs), such as sulphasalazineor mesalazine, are medications that help toreduce inflammation. They're usually the first treatment option for mildor moderate ulcerative colitis. 5-ASAs can be used as a short-term treatment for flare-ups. They can also be taken long term, usually for the rest of your life,to maintain remission. 5-ASAscan be taken: How you take 5-ASAs depends on the severity and extent of your condition. These medications rarely haveside effects, but some people may experience: Corticosteroids Corticosteroids (steroid medication),are amore powerful type of medication used to reduce inflammation. They can be used with or instead of ASAs to treat a flare-upif ASAs alone are … Continue reading
