UN agency, Swiss scientists team up to crunch genome data to increase animal health

Posted: Published on February 11th, 2015

10 February 2015 The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced today that it is teaming up with a Swiss institute using computer technology to study biological data in combatting dangerous viral infections such as bird flu that strike animals but can also be transmitted to humans. Future joint initiatives include a genetic module for Rift Valley fever a viral disease that is potentially devastating to livestock and can also be transmitted to humans and African swine fever, FAO said in a press release. "The new technology helps us understand biological threats in order to help countries better prevent, respond and ultimately protect the health of humans, animals and the environment," said FAO's Chief Veterinary Officer, Juan Lubroth. FAO said it chose SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics as a designated reference centre to expand its access to state-of the-art technology. The Swiss institute, FAO said, is equipped with high performance computers, software, databases and a knowledgebase used for screening and monitoring animal diseases. These, like avian influenza, also known as bird flu, strike animals but can also be transmitted to humans. Working closely with FAO, SIB experts have developed tools to improve early detection and fast alert systems to … Continue reading

Need for ambitious projects in bioinformatics

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2015

Research and educational centres, working in the field of bioinformatics, should focus on envisaging ambitious projects with implications in the application-related fields such as agriculture, public health, environment and several others, said Alok Bhattacharya, Task Force Chairman at Department of Biotechnology (DBT). Interacting with the audience during the inaugural of 26th BTISnet Annual Coordinators Meeting at Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) here on Tuesday, Dr. Bhattacharya urged the participants to think big by coming out of their comfort zones and chart out a path for ambitious projects. Bioinformatics, in the country, has come a long way promoting biological sciences along with its developments. Various centres related to Bioinformatics should come together, by forming clusters, and embark on projects which will change the way, he added. Dr. Bhattacharya further emphasised on setting up a centralised database to store the research data and maintained that the Super Computer Infrastructure, soon to be set up at a cost of Rs.4,500 crore, would help the research to a great extent. European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) ChEMBL 20 incorporates the Pistoia Alliances HELM annotation

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2015

Wilmington, DE (PRWEB) February 03, 2015 The European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) has released version 20 of ChEMBL, the database of compound bioactivity data and drug targets. ChEMBL now incorporates the Hierarchical Editing Language for Macromolecules (HELM), the macromolecular representation standard recently released by the Pistoia Alliance. HELM can be used to represent simple macromolecules (e.g. oligonucleotides, peptides and antibodies) complex entities (e.g. those with unnatural amino acids) or conjugated species (e.g. antibody-drug conjugates). Including the HELM notation for ChEMBLs peptide-derived drugs and compounds will, in future, enable researchers to query that content in new ways, for example in sequence- and chemistry-based searches. Initially created at Pfizer, HELM was released as an open standard with an accompanying toolkit through a Pistoia Alliance initiative, funded and supported by its member organisations. EMBL-EBI joins the growing list of HELM adopters and contributors, which include Biovia, ACD Labs, Arxspan, Biomax, BMS, ChemAxon, eMolecules, GSK, Lundbeck, Merck, NextMove, Novartis, Pfizer, Roche, and Scilligence. All of these organisations have either built HELM-based infrastructure, enabled HELM import/export in their tools, initiated projects for the incorporation of HELM into their workflows, published content in HELM format, or supplied funding or in-kind contributions to the HELM project. Bridging the … Continue reading

Veteran scientist Nowak named executive director of UB bioinformatics hub

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2015

Norma J. Nowak, an experienced researcher and entrepreneur in the area of personalized medicine, has been named executive director of the University at Buffalos New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences. Nowak has served as the centers director of science and technology since 2003, shortly after its founding, and she is a professor of biochemistry at the university. Nowak is considered a pioneering researcher in human genomics, and her work contributed to the Human Genome Project, according to UB. She is a founder and chief scientific officer of Empire Genomics, a molecular diagnostics company that grew out of her research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. From 1999 to 2012, she was director of the Genomics Shared Resource, a research lab shared by UBs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and Roswell Park. Nowak has authored or co-authored 144 research papers. The bioinformatics center, located on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, hosts life-sciences researchers and startup companies and supports the commercialization of ground-breaking science. The center expanded its initial focus on bioinformatics research, which uses supercomputers to sift through vast amounts of genetic data to seek medical drugs tailored to individual patients. Nowak replaces Alexander N. Cartwright, … Continue reading

Remission Coach: A Revolutionary Clinical Trials Platform to be Launched This Year by ICAN and MediSapiens

Posted: Published on January 27th, 2015

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, January 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S.-based cancer patient advocacy and charitable organization, International Cancer Advocacy Network (ICAN), in collaboration with Finland-based bioinformatics company MediSapiens, announced their intent to launch Remission Coach (patent pending) this year in a presentation at the Personalized Medicine World Conference in Mountain View, California. Remission Coach is a web-based solution that addresses the urgency of cancer management by providing patients with a personalized platform for actively determining the most appropriate clinical trial for that patient's disease and treatment history. According to Robert H. Tamis, M. D., ICAN's Chairman of Health Information Technology Initiatives, "Remission Coach offers a secure, sophisticated, yet easy-to-use electronic interface for patients and their caregivers to safely enter and store clinical information, such as pathology and imaging reports, treatment history, and molecular profiling data. The clinical trials industry and patients will be able to use Remission Coach for immediate access to critical information that will vastly improve and accelerate the recruitment of trial candidates while minimizing the notoriously crippling costs of patient accrual." Only a very small percentage of late-stage cancer patients are informed by their oncology teams about clinical trials. This is not for lack of effort or caring … Continue reading
