New Scanning Microscope to Aid both Medical and Industrial Diagnosis
Posted: Published on November 27th, 2014
Low-cost DNA sequencing has helped to create a boom in bioinformatics, whose main purpose is to speed up the medical diagnostics process. Now a new, cutting-edge technique being used by 3Scan enables automation of microscopy. The team at US startup 3Scan see their mission as taking the science of biology to the next level, shifting it away from a basically qualitative approach, with biologists working manually on individual tissue samples, to one is that is able to draw on quantitative data and 3D modelling techniques. The 3Scan microscope enables researchers to capture thousands of images in a few hours. Powerful scanners are in widespread use in the field of radiology and 3Scan has set out to provide a high-performance tool for examining organic tissue at the microscopic level as well. The 3Scan proposition is however about much more than just saving time. Being able to perform 3D modelling of an organ using a microscope can basically change the way a biologist works. Low-cost DNA sequencing has in recent years made it more feasible to customise diagnostics and treatment, and bioinformatics in general has become an essential driver in the paradigm shift which life sciences are undergoing. The potential to work … Continue reading

State Is Trying, But Gaining Traction Is Tough In Emerging Field Of Bioinformatics
Posted: Published on November 24th, 2014
When executives hundreds or thousands of miles away from Connecticut make decisions to restructure or close a pharmaceutical research office here, what happens to the Ph.D.s who worked there? Do they scatter to suburban Washington, Boston or California, where biotech is booming? Do they stay and go into business for themselves? Find a job at another company in Connecticut? Or find a retreat in academia? A sizable number of Connecticut's entrepreneurs in bioinformatics, a hot young field which merges computer science and medical research, are veterans of these upheavals. Although many have been beneficiaries of state spending to make the state a hub for biotech research and commercial ventures, they are far from certain that their small efforts will add up to a true cluster of expertise and employment opportunities. The field suffered a body blow in Connecticut when more than 1,000 jobs at pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. in Groton disappeared in the past five years. Bob Volkmann lost his job at Pfizer's Groton research center in 2009 after 34 years with the company. He and other Pfizer refugees that year formed SystaMedic Inc. in Groton, where Volkmann is now chief scientific officer. The company specializes in bioinformatics for drug … Continue reading
