SBRI backs Eagles genomic data technology

Posted: Published on May 12th, 2014

Eagle, the Cambridge UK bioinformatics specialist, has won a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition which will see the company further develop its technology for genomic data management and analysis. As a winner of the first phase, Eagle will receive a share of the 1.6 million fund available. This will be used to extend the capabilities of its existing technology platform Eagle Core, which has been developed to meet the demand for improved NGS technology in the healthcare sector. The extensions include improved study tracking and data sharing, streamlined sequence analysis, variant calling and annotation pipelines in order to scale up for the 100,000 genomes analysis. This will also improve data protection and security compliance in line with NHS Information Governance and HIPAA. After the completion of the initial six-month project, a further 8 million will be made available in phase 2 of the competition to those companies judged to have the best products once they have been developed and tested. Eagle CEO Abel Ureta-Vidal said: Improved and streamlined genomic analysis will play a key role in tackling rare diseases and cancer. In both cases, the causes are a combination of genetic and other factors, making the need for improved … Continue reading

How immune cells use steroids

Posted: Published on May 9th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 8-May-2014 Contact: Sonia Furtado Neves pressoffice@embl.de 49-622-138-78263 European Molecular Biology Laboratory Hinxton, 8 May 2014 Researchers at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute have discovered that some immune cells turn themselves off by producing a steroid. The findings, published in Cell Reports, have implications for the study of cancers, autoimmune diseases and parasitic infections. If you've ever used a steroid, for example cortisone cream on eczema, you'll have seen first-hand how efficient steroids are at suppressing the immune response. Normally, when your body senses that immune cells have finished their job, it produces steroids but which cells actually do that? In this latest study, scientists looked at Th2 immune cells during parasitic infection and saw that at a certain point, these cells produce a steroid called pregnenolone. "We were really surprised to see that these immune cells are producing a steroid. In cell culture, we see that the steroids play a part in regulating T cell proliferation," says Bidesh Mahata in the Teichmann group at EMBL-EBI and Sanger, who designed the study. "We had already seen that T-helper cells were producing steroids, but initially we were blind what was going on?" "Because … Continue reading
