Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Light is a principal tool of scientists working at the cellular and molecular scales. University of New Mexico and Los Alamos National Lab scientists are at the forefront of the newest technologies, revealing the hidden beauty of living cells and the molecules that provide the essentials of life. The goal of the Art of Systems Biology and Nanoscience annual event in Santa Fe is to share stunning scientific images of nature with the public, with a weekend of fun for adults and children. This years annual event runs March 27 and 28 at a new venue: Peters Projects Gallery near Canyon Road in Santa Fe. Through collaboration with the Gerald Peters Gallery and Peters Projects, visitors will enjoy a unique synergy of hard science and contemporary interpretation of science and nature. The event opens Friday night, with the first preview of the art. Entitled Inventory of Light, the show will feature the works of UNM and LANL microscopists as well as 10 participating artists who have a scientific focus in their art practice. A popular feature of these events are the public lectures featuring senior scientists who give approachable talks about how … Continue reading

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise BETHESDA, Md., February 12, 2015 Six scientific societies will hold their joint scientific sessions and annual meetings, known as Experimental Biology (EB), from March 28 April 1, 2015, in Boston. This meeting, EB 2015, brings together the leading researchers from dozens of life-science disciplines. The societies represented at the meeting will be: the American Association of Anatomists (AAA), the American Physiological Society (APS), the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), the American Society for Investigative Pathology (ASIP), the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) and the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET). Below are some programming highlights: Leaning In Without Falling Over: Supporting the Success of Women in Science (AAA) Does gender bias still exist for the most educated women in the country? This special session will tackle issues women in STEM fields face, from their student days through to their rise through the ranks of academia. Topics include the perspective of female faculty on navigating gender bias when achieving leadership roles; gender-based differences in the way men and women view money, the negotiation process, self-worth and entitlement; and the great sexodus of women leaving the scientific career pipeline … Continue reading

Cancer researchers may inspire new area of research in cellular biology

Posted: Published on February 11th, 2015

Ground-breaking research from Griffith University on the Gold Coast has some scientists wondering if the entire study of cellular biology needs to be adjusted. A research collaboration between Griffith and the Malaghan Institute in Wellington, New Zealand has made the discovery that mitochondria are capable of passing through the healthy membrane of a host cell into defective tumour cells, possibly kicking off the rapid proliferation of tumour cells which is the hallmark of cancer. Until now each cell was believed to be a unique entity, with mitochondria and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) bound within the cell membrane. The Griffith and Malaghan research has found this mtDNA is capable of moving from a healthy cell to a dysfunctional tumour cell. Professor Jiri Neuzil led the Griffith research and believes the discovery of mtDNA movement may form whole new areas of study. "What we've found is that it's possible for genetic material to pass from one cell to another and for that material to bring a cell 'back to life'. This is a considerable finding in our understanding of human biology," says Professor Neuzil. "This process has previously been observed by scientists in a laboratory setting, but together with the New Zealand group, … Continue reading
